Last night, American tech company NVIDIA announced the GeForce Titan X, claiming to be the “most powerful video card” ever. The upcoming 2016 Titan X will be released on August 2, 2016, and will have a $1,200 price tag.
Especial emphasis on the ‘new’ part, as there’s already a GTX Titan X model out there, but that one was released to the market in 2015. Not sure why NVIDIA decided to keep the same name but make sure you order the right GTX Titan X.
Although a step behind in low-end and mid-range graphics cards, with rival AMD powering video game consoles Sony PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Wii U, NVIDIA is focusing on controlling the highest end GPUs for PC gaming.
Monster specs
The latest Titan X replaces the original that was launched in March 2015. Not a spec, but a must-remember detail. The NVIDIA Titan X runs on the new 16nm FinFET Pascal architecture, which ensures incredible power efficiency and performance.
The specs of the 2016 Titan X matches its name, with 12GB of 10Gbps GDDR5X VRAM, 1.5GX clock speed, 3584 CUDA Cores, and SLI compatibility, for an 11 TFLOPs of power that mostly outpaces the rest of NVIDIA GPUs, and even the AMD powered Xbox One Scorpio, which will have 6 TFLOPs.
This makes the Titan X the most powerful consumer-grade GPU, being more than capable of allowing users to withstand 4K and VR gaming without stuttering.
Plus, the Titan X will support NVIDIA’s VRWorks Audio, a tool for VR developers, and will have the game-centric photography device, NVIDIA Ansel.
What’s new
Jen-Hsun Huang, CEO, and co-founder of the graphics processor company announced NVIDIA considers the latest Titan X as NVIDIA’s new flagship card.
Indeed, it seems to be a whole different level and category, being presented solely as Titan X, not like a new GeForce card, nor Quadro or Tesla.
By setting it apart from the GeForce tree line, NVIDIA appears to cement the Titan X’s place as a processor card, one that can be used as both a computer card for workstations and an uber gaming card for PC gaming.
One thing that hasn’t changed is the price. The Titan X is the crown jewel of NVIDIA, and as has always been the case, they are expensive. The monster card will have a price tag of $1200, $200 more than the previous GTX Titan X, and $500 more than the GTX 1080 Founders Edition. It is unknown whether this new card will have a Founders Edition as well.
