Hennessey Performance Engineering has revealed the VelociRaptor 6×6 ahead of the launch of the 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor. The SUV will compete against the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6×6 with a surprisingly competitive price and more horsepower.
The Hennessey VelociRaptor is an SUV version of the Ford SVT Raptor manufactured at the automotive company’s central facility in Houston, Texas. It has the same Ford engine the pickup truck version uses. Hennessey stopped production of the first generation model last year.
The company only makes 30 of the luxury off-road full-size SUV every year. However, it has manufactured over 400 versions since introducing the VelociRaptor. The second generation model is a modified 2015 Ford Super Duty Lariat Version featuring design cues from the Ford Excursion.
Established in 1991 by John Hennessey, the American tuning house specializes in modifying sports and supercars from several brands such as Ferrari, Porsche, McLaren, Chevrolet, and Cadillac. Hennessey also tunes sport utility vehicles like Ford Raptors and Jeep Cherokees as well as luxury cars (e.g. Bentleys) and muscle cars (e.g. Dodge Charger and Challenger).
Hennessey’s VelociRaptor 6×6 completely overpowers the Ford F-150 Raptor
The six-wheeled VelociRaptor starts with the Ford F-150 Raptor’s 450-hp 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine and 10-speed automatic transmission. However, it boasts a locking differential on each of the two rear axles, and an upgraded Fox suspension.
Its off-road tires come with 20-inch wheels as well as custom front and rear bumpers, a roll bar, and roof-mounted LED lights.
Hennessey is also offering the VelociRaptor with at least 600 hp if the Raptor’s 450 hp are not enough. Enhanced turbos, front intercooler and plumbing combined with a new stainless steel exhaust and a modified engine computer do the trick.
Other optional features include Brembo front and rear brakes, larger wheels and tires, and armoring.
Hennessey’s Velociraptor price
While the 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor has an estimated base price of between $50,000 and $53,000 the first VelociRaptor costs $295,000. One might say the difference is way too high, but it seems like a bargain when put up against the $630,000 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6×6.
It is also true the handmade Mercedes has several advantages. The G63 sports a two-speed transfer case, a locking center differential, a locking differential for the three axles, and a locking inter-axle differential on each of the two rear axles.
However, the VelociRaptor has insane specs as well and more importantly is still way cheaper than the G63. Additionally, for another $22,500 Hennessey will equip the Velociraptor with a 600 hp engine overpowering the G63’s 536 hp motor.
