Rumors say the Nintendo NX could have a new release date, price, and name. Nintendo has yet to officially unveil its next gaming console set to compete with Sony’s PlayStation 4 Pro and PlayStation VR as well as Microsoft’s upcoming Xbox Project Scorpio.
Announced in March 2015 under the codename NX, the Japanese company stated it would reveal further details about its latest Nintendo console during 2016. However, this hasn’t been the case. Reports have since speculated with a handheld and home console hybrid that will feature industry-leading hardware specifications.
In June 2015, Nintendo of America president and chief operating officer Reggie Fils-Aimé referred to NX as Nintendo’s next home console. Meanwhile, Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima said the NX was neither the successor to the Wii U nor the 3DS.
Until recently, the only thing known for sure was that the NX would be released worldwide in March 2017. The company announced it at an investor’s meeting last April. Nintendo hadn’t revealed any information about the NX due to fear that other companies could copy the idea. But now it appears the NX’s release date could be earlier.
Nintendo NX will be on par with the PS4 and Xbox One
Apparently, there are about 20 games in development, including Ubisoft’s next Beyond Good and Evil. The title could be an NX exclusive. Additionally, all games will be on cartridges. It seems that the NX will hit stores with four games plus a Mario launch title.
More rumors say the NX is graphically on par with the PS4 and the Xbox One and supports 4K streaming for Netflix as well as 1080p and 60fps for gaming. Along with detachable controllers, the NX could also feature smartphone connectivity and virtual reality (VR) supports.
The console may have a wireless dongle to allow for TV upscaling, instead of a dock for the NX’s handheld component. A slogan that reads “Interact with your game on the go” has been spotted on marketing materials, further confirming the NX is going to be a handheld console.
Nintendo NX will compete with the PS4 Pro, PlayStation VR, and Xbox Project Scorpio
Investment firm Macquarie said Nintendo could unveil the NX as early as next week, or at least before the end of 2016, according to other reports. Nintendo hasn’t confirmed any of it, so the March 2017 release date still stands as the official one.
Already in production tests, the NX’s real name is set to be Nintendo Duo referencing its hybrid configuration. Aiming to compete with the PS4 Pro, PlayStation VR, and Xbox Project Scorpio will have a similar price tag instead of the the Wii’s former discount to rival consoles.
Rumors suggest the Nintendo NX/Nintendo Duo will have a base price of between $299.99 and $349.99, and a $399.99 bundle price. It is currently unknown what the package includes.
