After a long, long wait, one of Sony’s signature games returns. The latest title of the ‘Tomb Raider’ franchise has finally arrived on the PlayStation 4 after nearly a year of timed exclusivity on Microsoft consoles. ‘Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration’ also brings fresh DLC content for all platforms.

The game’s arrival on PS4 follows Square Enix’s announcement back in mid-July. At the time, the developers stated the latest ‘Tomb Raider’ game would land on the home console by Sony along with two new pieces of content: the VR enabled chapter ‘Blood Ties’ and the survival mode ‘Lara’s Nightmare.’

‘Rise of the Tomb Raider’ first hit the Xbox 360 and Xbox one back in November 2015, landing later on PC in late January. The ’20 Year Celebration’ edition brings further in-game exclusive features, as well as physical goodies for those who pre-order a copy.

Rise of the Tomb Raider’s plot

Much like Indiana Jones in ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark,’ the title character of the rebooted video game franchise embarks on a journey through the Siberian Mountains to look for an ancient artifact.

The Divine Source is an item of divine origins that is said to grant eternal life to those who possess it. The object plays a stellar role in the game’s story, as Lara Croft’s dying wish was to find and preserve the mythical item.

However, as players might guess, it will not be an easy task for the iconic explorer. She will face a mercenary group known as the Trinity who are also searching for the Divine Source and are up to no good.

‘Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration’ includes the previously released DLCs ‘Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch’ and ‘Cold Darkness Awakened.’ Also, it packs a new co-op mode Endurance, exclusive weapons, outfits, and expedition cards. Furthermore, the 50-hour main campaign gets a new difficulty setting called ‘Extreme Survivor’ mode.

Price and release date

The PS4 release of ‘Rise of the Tomb Raider’ brings with it an update for Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC that adds the ‘Blood Ties’ chapter to the game.

Unfortunately for newcomers to the game on Sony’s platform, the VR enabled feature seems to be lacking in actual virtual reality. Several outlets have reported that, upon testing the new game add-on, players feel dizzy after just a few minutes of playing if they do so sitting down.

They added ‘Blood Ties’ felt like it was not designed as a VR game, but rather as another chapter later modified to fit on the new platform. Considering the PS VR costs $399, it is more than shocking news to learn this from such an expected PS4 title.

‘Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration’ edition is available for $59.99 at select retailers and on the PlayStation Store as a digital download starting October 11.
