Chicago-based company US Cellular is releasing an over-the-air update of Android Marshmallow 6.0.1 that will affect the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. Users were widely expecting this update, and it’s coming a bit late to these devices, according to Tech Times.
This upgrade is the last company to release the software update, way behind of its other major competitors. The first to provide Marshmallow to these devices was Sprint, which did so in March. Verizon followed, three months later, and lastly by AT&T, who rolled out the upgrade just last month.
The tardiness of this update might affect US Cellular’s buys as the newer version of Android, 7.0 Nougat, is already on the market, which translates to a huge portion of users flocking to purchase the devices that contain it.
The OS’ release, however, is happening on an appropriate date. October 5 marks the anniversary of Android Marshmallow, released that very day year ago for phones like the Nexus 6P and the Nexus 5X.
Marshmallow’s features and changes, again revised
An article published on PC Magazine last month named eleven unique functionalities added and improved on the 6.0.1 OS from Android. The new features include the possibility of using Google Now without leaving your apps running in the background, enhanced copy-paste features, voice searching from the lock screen, and Smart Lock for password storage on the cloud, among others.
A secret hidden menu called UI Tuner, allowing users to do some experimental tweaking, was also added, they can access it by pressing down the gear icon for Settings for a couple of seconds.
Users have reported some problems with the OS, however. WiFi bugs, fast battery drain, and download issues have been the first calamities on record. These errors are reportingly varying from phone to phone, with different models experimenting various setbacks. Some of them have to do with specific apps, like Amazon or Doze.
Marshmallow’s successor grows nearer
The latest version of the Android OS (Nougat 7.0) was released earlier this year in August, along with a list of devices that will be the first to enjoy the upgrades of the new operating system.
The first software update for Nougat was made available for Nexus phones on August 22. Then, the LG V20 became the first smartphone to be loaded with it upon purchase. Google’s Pixel Phones, released on October 4, became the first smartphones to feature version 7.1.
