Gears of War 4 is fast closing up. It will be released on October 4th, and Microsoft has started talking about their flagship’s debut. Their lead developer gave reporters a closer look at the production of what’s possibly going to be the biggest Microsoft title yet.
GoW 4 is the first new entry of the gory, M-rated third person shooter since Microsoft and Coalition Studio took the franchise from its original creators in 2014, Epic Games. GoW4 will go exclusively for Xbox One and Windows 10 and will be a part of the 26-million sold Xbox exclusive series.
Coalition studio – based in Vancouver – has their complete focus on the Gear of War series. Their director, Rob Ferguson, is the original creator of the brand and recently parted ways with US-based Epic Games. His other significant work was in the production of Bioshock Infinite.
Ferguson feels one of the pillars of the franchise is the ability to play the single-player campaign along with a friend
When Ferguson arrived at newcomer studio Coalition, he commanded the team to play the franchise and read the books and comic books. Then he would arrange group meetings where the employees should face trivia contest about the Gears of War lore.
The coalition then rebuilt the whole game from scratch. To make it so, the developers first learned how to re-create the combat of the earlier games, and then added more spice to make it better.
They ended with a plot 25 years apart from Gears of War 3 with the return of Marcus Fenix and his on the hunt after a “classified incident” has made two of the new characters go AWOL: JD Fenix, son of Marcus Fenix; JD’s best friend, Delmont “Del” Walker.
The leader of the Outsider village Reyna Diaz and her daughter, Kait Diaz, will also join the cast of heroes, alongside Reyna’s brother-in-law, Oscar Diaz.
The events of the game take over the course of a single day
The developers hope a closer look to the characters will help the players relate more to the plot. Ferguson has said that it is critical to offer both bullet-free fun with a narrative that could catch the players in particular moments, such as the Dom scene in the third installment.
The plot develops in a post-Locus, post-Lambent world, where peace was but a brief illusion. There will be new weapons and new enemies, but the core combat –cover system and over the shoulder shooting – will remain.
However, apart from the plot and the producing, developers have already released gameplay footage of the four game modes: the single-player campaign, the horde mode, versus mode, and multiplayer mode over the last months.
GoW 4 is an Xbox Play Anywhere title
It means that activating a PC copy will grant a free digital version for the console and vice versa. On that regard, developers have said the size of the PC copy would be a whopping 80 GB, while the Xbox One version will be a smaller. Microsoft recommends at least a Nvidia GTX 1070 or 1080 to play the game on the desktop.
The game will unlock for days earlier for people who but the $100 Ultimate Edition.
