Sony’s biggest update yet to the PlayStation 4 is now available for download to install system software version 4.00. Codenamed Shingen, the update brings a renovated system UI, a redesigned Quick Menu, Folders and Library improvements, among other additional features.
The company’s major software release comes almost a week after the unveiling of new hardware at the PlayStation Meeting on September 7. The special live event launched the PlayStation 4 Slim and PlayStation 4 Pro, two PS4 hardware revisions.
The 500 GB Slim is a quieter and smaller version of the original PS4. It will go on sale on September 15 with a $299 price tag. Meanwhile, the PS4 Pro, initially announced under the codename Neo, will play games at a 4K resolution as well as improve the quality of the PlayStation VR. It will hit stores on November 10 and will cost $399.
The 4.00 patch is the latest to Orbis OS, the PS4’s native operating system since the 3.55 update It merely weighed 300MB and only improved the quality of the system performance.
UI, Quick Menu, Folders, and Library
The PS4’s main user interface (UI) got improved, while its overall look and feel received a renovation. They added new system backgrounds, refreshed system icons and revamped pop up notifications and drop down menus to make them clearer.
In regards to the Quick Menu, it got redesigned and now covers only a portion of the screen, meaning players will not have to leave their games. They can also customize it to access their most used features.
The menu introduces sShortcuts like create a party for players they are gaming with or send them messages, view trophies for the game they are currently playing, check if friends are online, start Share Play or a broadcast of their gameplay, and control music playback.
With the enhanced Folders and Library, gamers can now easily keep tabs on their games and apps collection via custom folders. They can add these folders to the main home-screen and their library as well as edit, sort or remove them when they want.
Other additional features
The ‘What’s New’ section now includes more gaming information about friends. The left column brings the new Activity Feed with larger images and commenting or resharing options. The right column delivers sections to interact, like and comment like Now Playing, Trending, Players You May Know and Who to Follow.
The redesigned Content Info Screen, accessed by pressing down on a game tile while on the home screen, allow players to view a game’s Overview, Trending media, Friends and Communities, Activities and related PlayStation Store content.
Finally, PS4 users can transfer all their games, saved data, captures, and settings from one PS4 system to another. It’s especially useful if they are replacing their PS4 system with a new one like upgrading to PS4 Pro.
