HBO and Cinemax are now available on Sony’s PlayStation Vue as well as the service’s new Ultra package. The bundle features more than 100 channels already included in the Elite package and adds premium networks such as HBO and Showtime.
Unlike HBO, Cinemax does not appear in the Ultra subscription. Both channels premiered on the PlayStation Vue yesterday. Others channels recently introduced by Sony include the NFL Network and NFL RedZone.
Founded by Sony in 2015, the over-the-top internet television service has now approximately 120,000 subscribers. PlayStation Vue combines live and on-demand TV as well as a cloud-based DVR to stream TV shows, movies, and sports directly from consoles or other devices without a cable or satellite subscription.
PlayStation Vue supports PlayStation consoles (PS4 and PS3), Amazon Fire TV, Google Chromecast, Roku, Android and iOS mobile devices. The service limits simultaneous streams to five devices.
HBO’s Westworld arrives at the PlayStation Vue
Two weeks ago, Sony announced HBO and Cinemax would be its new VIP additions to PlayStation Vue’s catalog. Both channels are now available as Vue became the first streaming service to offer HBO and Cinemax without a bundle subscription.
Vue also offers both TV networks as standalone options for $15 each per month. With their introduction, HBO’s streaming apps HBO Go, HBO Now and Max Go are now at one’s disposal, too.
Sony had a particular interest in bringing HBO onboard due to its highly successful TV series Game of Thrones as well as its upcoming show Westworld. The long-awaited science fiction thriller stars Anthony Hopkins, Evan Rachel Wood, and Ed Harris.
Created by Person of Interest’s Jonathan Nolan, Westworld is a remake of Michael Crichton’s 1973 film of the same name. Lost duo J. J. Abrams and Bryan Burk are the executive producers behind the series.
The TV show explores the world that surrounds a futuristic theme park called Westworld, where every human desire, noble or depraved, can be satisfied. It will premiere on October 2.

PlayStation Vue rolled out in selected cities of the United States in 2015 and launched across the country back in March. Sony has agreements with major content producers including ABC, CBS, Disney, ESPN, Fox, NBC Universal, AMC Networks, and more.
The latest PlayStation Vue bundle will include all of Vue’s current offerings for $74.99 per month in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, San Francisco, and Miami. In the remaining US locations, it will cost $64.99 per month.
After the free one-week trial, Sony’s service proposes the Ultra and three more packages. Access for $40 (55 channels), Core for $45 (70 channels) and Elite for $55 (100 channels). Further add-ons range from $5 to $40.
