Seagate Technology unveiled its new 60TB solid state drive at The Flash Memory Sumit conference this Tuesday. The company earned an award for “Most Innovative Flash Memory Technology” with it.
The SSD holds the largest storage capacity for a solid state disk known to date. Production and distribution are expected to start at some point next year, and the disk is currently on a “demonstration only” phase, according to its manufacturer.
The 60TB SDD Attached SCSI (SAS) SSD is the official name of the new solid state drive. The Santa Clara Convention Center served as the location for Seagate to reveal its new product to the public and competitors.
The 60TB SAS SSD can store 400 million pictures and 12,000 DVD movies
With its 60TB capacity, the SDD would be the largest on the market, dethroning the previous champion, Samsung’s 16TB PM1633A, a significant leap in storage devices.
Seagate stated during the conference the 60TB featured twice the density and four times the capacity of the next highest capacity SDD available today, and it’s capable of holding up to 400 million photos or 12.000 movies.
The 3.5-inch device also provides an easier handling of “Cold” and “Hot” data by eliminating separate support forms for each type, a feature that would help data centers when changing storage requirements.
The manufacturer follows a line of similar releases as it launched a 2TB version of the low-power enterprise NVMe SSD series “Nytro” back in July. However, a fundamental difference between that disk and the 60TB – apart from the storage capacity – is that the Nytro was oriented to speed up production in small companies, while the new SDD is designed to manage data centers from corporations or multinationals.

Seagate unveiled its Nytro series in the conference
Seagate also announced a new Nytro 8TB series during the conference, and along with the 60TB, the company seeks to dominate the solid state disk market.
Brett Pemble, Seagate’s GM and VP of SDD products, recently posted some remarks about the importance of storage capacity on the manufacturer`s blog.
“DATA AND TIME ARE MONEY, AND NOWHERE IS MORE APPARENT THANT IN TODAY’S ENTERPRISES, WHICH ARE GRAPPLING TO ACCOMMODATE EVER-INCREASING AMOUNTS WITHOUT LOSING THE ABILITY TO QUICKLY ACCES IT AND PROCESS IT TO CONTINUE DERIVING VALUE.”
The release date and price for Seagate’s 60TB SSD is yet to be determined, though it should be expected to hit the shelves sometime next year, according to the company.
