China – Chinese handset manufacturer Xiaomi showcased two new smartphones this week, plus a VR headset that comes with a controller. The company is selling one of those as “the ultimate phone,” and its unique design might prove that.

The Mi Mix is a 6.4-inch 2040 x 1080 display behemoth with no bezels, no home button, no sensors, and no earpiece. It features a 91.3 percent screen-to-body ratio, the first of a plethora of devices. Also, it packs every high-end spec a premium phone could have.

Mi Mix represents a breakthrough on existing innovations in the smartphone industry.

The other smartphone is a Galaxy Note 7 look alike, Mi Note 2. It is a 5.7- Full HD display phone with a Snapdragon 821 processor, 4,070mAh battery, a 22MP rear-facing camera, 4K video recording, 6GB LPDDR4 RAM, and up to 128GB UFS 2.0 storage.

Mi Mix, the phone with the biggest screen-to-body ratio ever

The Mi Mix has a screen-to-body ratio crushes the Pixel XL at 71.2 percent and the iPhone 7 at 67.7 percent.

Xiaomi had to get rid of the physical earpiece speaker and sensors to get to such high levels, and chose to build a piezoelectric ceramic driver for the speaker instead of the standard ultrasonic proximity sensor.

The drawback is the big screen offers no space for a front camera. Xiaomi took the module to the bottom half of the device, meaning users would have to turn the phone upside down to snap a selfie.

The 6.4-inch edgeless body has no bezels on any of its sides, while the entire body is made entirely of ceramic, including the frame and buttons. It gives the phone both toughness and a premium feel.

Mi Mix specs

Mi Mix phone offers a 2.35GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor. Customers can choose between 4GB RAM plus 128GB storage or 6GB RAM with 256GB UFS 2.0 storage. It has a 654,400mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 support.

It has a 16MP rear camera with the PDAF feature while a 5MP sits on the front. Notably, there will by 18-kerat gold accents around the camera and fingerprint sensor on the back.

Lastly, it has a high-precision GPS with sensor-assisted positioning.

Mi Mix and Mi Note 2 price and release date

All Xiomi phones launch only in Asia, and it does not look like these smartphones are going to make it to western markets.

Mi Note 2 will cost about $400 coming in Piano Black or Glacier Silver. Mi Mix will launch with a starting price of $522 for the 128GB storage version, while the 256GB will cost about $591.

Xiaomi will launch the phones on November 4.
