Roku released the latest version of its free mobile app on Tuesday for both Android and iOS devices. The app brings a revamped look and a new navigation bar through which users can easily access streaming options with just one tap.
The streaming powerhouse comes from giving a stellar performance at CES 2017 in Las Vegas, where it unveiled an array of new 4K HDR Roku TV models in partnership with brands like Hisense, TCL, Sharp, and others.
Roku’s updated app aims at providing a better user experience to customers by putting more control on their hands.
Roku lets you see What’s On without turning on the TV
Among the new functions coming to the Roku app, What’s On is perhaps the most useful. It lets viewers check which shows and movies are currently available for streaming on the different platforms they have on their Roku player.
The What’s On section offers a curated selection of content grouped into different categories. The Roku app shows, for example, all the superhero films and series, and once you select one of them, it will show you the viewing options you have if you want to stream it.
Roku lets you navigate through channels with ease
For users who prefer to browse manually, the updated Roku app launches straight away on the Channels tab, which shows all the channels installed on a streaming device.
If someone, in turn, is looking for something they do not have, he or she can easily access the Channel Store with just one tap next to the upper tab that shows My Channels.
If you somehow still cannot find what you are looking for, Roku has you covered. There is a search option in the top right of the screen to look directly for whatever show, movie, or channel you want to watch.
Roku gets smart with its redesigned in-app Remote
Roku knows there is no use in giving easy access to content if you don’t have control over your viewing experience, which is why the mobile app now prompts the Remote tab once you launch a stream.
This smart feature not only is practical in terms of functionality but also when it comes to actual user experience. Roku has enhanced the app to make the arrangement of Remote buttons more similar to the real remote controller, so now you can press them more easily.
Roku continues to support personal listening through mobile devices and direct search within the Remote mode, but now it has added an easy access to the Channels catalog on the upper right corner of the screen too.
The Roku mobile app is free to download on iOS and Android devices, and it is a great alternative for Roku device owners who have lost their remotes or just want to control everything from their smartphone or tablet.
