Tricks For Boosting Your Broadband Speed

These days, a lousy internet connection is more than just annoying. It may not be as essential as basic human rights, but it’s pretty close. Even refugees have access to the internet, yet some of us, particularly in rural areas, face big issues when it comes to broadband speed, which becomes even more problematic when business is involved. If you suffer from a miserable connection, try some of these tips to speed things up.

First, though, it may be helpful to use a tool that calculates the internet or download speed to find out how much of a problem you have. Check this number again after trying our tips to see what actually works.

Are You Up-to-Date?

Getting up to speed could be as simple as updating your browser and your computer’s operating system. The updates may solve existing problems or bugs that cause slower functioning or the new software may contain codes that help the internet to run faster. If updating the browser didn’t work, try clearing the cache as this usually holds a lot of data which can interrupt browsing and interfere with speed.

Background Processes

Sometimes you don’t realize, but you have more programs running than are necessary, some you may have left open, others you may not even know are active, and they might be using up the internet. To check which programs are in operation simply open the task manager in Windows using CTR + SHIFT + ESC, the activity monitor in Mac using the spotlight search, or the force quit screen in Mac under the Apple menu. End task or force quit the applications that you are not currently using which in turn may speed up your internet.

Router Issues

Moving your wifi router to a more central location can provide a stronger signal and faster connection, though you can buy boosters to assist with this if positioning doesn’t seem to be helping. For example, a power line adapter can help your connection to reach to corner of your house that doesn’t usually seem to pick it up.

If you have an open wifi network for ease of use, anyone is able to access it, slowing the network right down. If you haven’t already secured your network with a password, make sure to do so. Find your IP address, usually on the router, and type it into your search bar. This should display your router settings, you may need to sign in, and from here you can set or change your wifi password.

Change Providers

Perhaps your current provider simply doesn’t have the best coverage in your area. You can check this when you compare broadband deals on usave.co.uk. This site can check speeds and deals in your area, either saving you money, getting you faster internet, or the two in one. Sometimes the best deal might be a different package with the same provider, but even if you have to spend more, to get a solid connection, it’s often worth the trouble.
