The first teaser trailer for the animated comedy ‘The Emoji Movie in 3D‘ is already available on YouTube, courtesy of Sony. The movie will premiere on August 4, 2017, in theaters throughout the United States.

Producers have not revealed an official plot yet, but the film is already circulating through social media with the hashtag #ExpressYourself and in IMDb with the tagline “unlock the never-before-seen secret world inside your smartphone.”

The teaser makes use of the familiar Charles Wright funk melody of the same name and introduces the emoji ‘Mel Meh’ and his colleagues, the ice cream cone, the cookie, and the audience favorite, the Poop Emoji.

‘The Emoji movie’ plot

The movie takes place in the hidden city of Textopolis, which is where all emojis live and work. In there, they wait for the user to choose them from among a wide variety of options, dedicating themselves to only one expression.

The lead character, Gene, is the only emoji in the city who has no dedicated facial expression and lives as a sort of outcast in Textopolis. Along with his friend ‘Hi-5’ and the ‘Jailbreak’ emoji, he will go on a mission to find his individual expression and become natural in the eyes of his peers.

This epic “app-venture” will take the trio through many mobile applications, searching for the code that will make Gene into a real emoji. However, when an unexpected threat risks the entirety of the phone’s contents, he and his friends will venture to save the day.

‘The Emoji movie’ cast and crew

The film is almost complete under the guiding hand of director Anthony Leondis, known for ‘Lilo & Stitch 2’ (2005), and the lesser-known ‘Igor’ (2008).

Leondis is currently also in talks to direct a Dreamworks feature called ‘B.O.O.: Bureau of Otherworldly Operations,’ that will include Melissa McCarthy and Bill Murray.

‘The Emoji Movie’ will feature the voice talents of ‘Silicon Valley’ star T. J. Miller (Gene), UK-born comic James Corden (Hi-5), ‘The Night Before’ lead Ilana Glazer (Jailbreak), and the veteran performer Steven Wright as ‘Mel Meh.’ Even though he is in the teaser, the studio has not announced the name of the actor who plays the Poop Emoji.

Wright is currently the cast’s highlight, having worked in Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Reservoir Dogs,’ Jim Jarmusch’s ‘Coffee and Cigarettes,’ and many other comedy and drama features from the 1990s.
