Adult animated film Sausage Party is set to premiere on August 12 in the United States but the movie has critics already buzzing about it. They have seen the R-rated comedy in advance with reviews praising its great storyline to be as hilarious as it is offensive.

A rough-cut of the movie was shown at the South by Southwest Film Festival (SXSW) back in March and its final cut was screened at ‘Just for Laughs’ last month. Moreover, the film will be released internationally on September 2.

Sausage Party is a parody of Disney, Pixar, and DreamWorks animated films, and follows a sausage who “strives to discover the truth about his existence.”

The hot dog sausage named Frank (voiced by Seth Rogen), and his friends, live in a grocery store where all the food believes that being bought by humans is like going to heaven. But then a jar of honey mustard is returned to the shop and reveals people buy food to eat it.

So, Frank and company embark on a mission to warn their fellow food buddies, especially Frank’s love interest Brenda (voiced by Kristen Wiig), a hot dog bun he wants to get inside, like sexually. No wonder the movie’s official tagline is “Get your fill”.

Seth Rogen stated that he worked for eight years for his original story to reach theaters. He also co-penned the screenplay and produced the film. Although described by critics as food porn, Rogen said that the story had an innocent origin.

He explained that the idea came from the fact that people tend to project their emotions on their toys, cars, and pets. All these things have already starred in movies yip yapping about their purpose in life, so Rogen wanted to know what would it be like if the food had feelings too.

Sausage Party features an all-star voice cast

The film is directed by debutant director Greg Tiernan along Conrad Vernon and written by Kyle Hunter, Ariel Shaffir, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

The voice cast includes Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, Bill Hader, Michael Cera, James Franco, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Paul Rudd, Nick Kroll, David Krumholtz, Edward Norton and Salma Hayek.

Childhood friends Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen have previously worked together in Knocked Up, Superbad (conceived in their teenage years), 50/50, Pineapple Express, Neighbors, their directorial debut This Is the End, the controversial The Interview, and The Night Before. They will further team up in the upcoming Neighbors sequel and a biopic titled The Masterpiece.

Sausage Party, Goldberg and Rogen’s latest collaboration has been making headlines since day one as Hollywood’s first R-rated animated movie. Back in June, its restricted trailer was shown in a theater before the PG-rated trailer of Finding Dory. Rogen tweeted that the situation had “made his day”. And when he submitted the film to the MPAA, it was assigned an NC-17 rating for a pubic hair that was visible. The pubic hair got digitally removed, and Sausage Party got back its R rating.
