Galaxy S7 Vs LG G5: Which is BEST?

With two South Korean brands, LG and Samsung, bringing out their flagship devices today, you might be wondering about which one to go for. Here is a comparison between the two devices based on their design, display, specs, camera, battery and pricing.

Design

The S7 has not brought about much of a change as far as design is concerned from its predecessor, the Galaxy S6. Dimensions wise, the S7 measures 143.4 x 70.8 x 6.9 mm (5.65 x 2.79 x 0.27 in) and weighs 152 g.

LG has gone big with its modular, full metal body design. To be honest, the device does look quite good and we will hand over this comparison to LG. Dimensions wise, the LG G5 measures 149.4 x 73.9 x 7.7mm and weighs 159 g.

Display

The Samsung Galaxy S7 sports a 5.1 inches wide Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels (~576 ppi pixel density) and 16M colors.

The LG G5 sports a 5.3 inches wide IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen, with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels (~554 ppi pixel density) and 16M colors.

The two displays are quite comparable when it comes to the specs, however, if we talk about the benefits of an AMOLED panel over the IPS Panel, then the S7 has an advantage. The AMOLED Panel could save on battery and is able to produce blacks better than IPS displays, though, color reproduction is a bit washed out and over saturated in our opinion. Both displays are in no way or form bad, we would actually say that the two are capable of excellent performance.

Specs

Underneath the hood, the S7 is powered by a Qualcomm MSM8996 Snapdragon 820/ Exynos 8890 Octa processor, coupled with 4GB of RAM at and 32GB of internal storage and Adreno 530/ Mali-T880 MP12 GPU. The internal memory is expandable via an external microSD card slot.

Underneath the hood, the LG G5 is powered by a Qualcomm MSM8996 Snapdragon 820 processor, coupled with 4GB of RAM at and 64GB of internal storage and Adreno 530 GPU. Built-in storage is expandable via microSD card up to 200GB.

The specs are quite comparable – we call it a tie.

Camera

Camera wise, the S7’s primary shooter, located on the rear, shoots at 12MP and has an aperture of f/1.7. As for the front camera, the device comes with a 5MP shooter.

Talking about the camera the LG G5’s primary shooters, located on the rear, shoots at 16MP and packs 1/2″ sensor size, geo-tagging, touch focus, face/smile detection, panorama, HDR. It also features 135 degrees wide angle shot. The secondary ‘selfies’ camera, embed on the front, comes with an 8MP sensor.

We would say that the LG G5 is better with it’s wide angle lens and the ability for adding modular parts to enhance the camera performance like the LG Cam+ add-on.

Battery

To accommodate the HD 5.1-inch screen, Samsung has backed the device up with a non-removable 3,000mAh battery. The handset will be featuring quick charging along with wireless charging as well.

To accommodate the HD 5.3-inch screen, LG has backed the device up with a removable 2,800mAh battery.

Here LG again takes the game, as a removable battery that comes with a solid battery capacity is definitely better. The fact that the company has designed its battery to be replaced withing seconds just adds to the overall advantage.

Software

The S7 will come with Android 6.0 Marshmallow straight out of the box, skinned under Samsung’s TouchWiz UI.

Likewise, the LG G5 will come with Android 6.0 Marshmallow straight out of the box, skinned under the LG Optimus UX 5.0.

Both devices are on an equal footing here. However, we think that the TouchWIz UI needs to make changes that are long overdue.

The Verdict

We definitely think that LG has nailed it with the modular design of the device. Samsung has not done much of an upgrade when it comes to the design and there is nothing exciting that we could rave about. The add-ons and other gadgets that could accompany the G5 do make it genuinely interesting.

We think that this one does go to the G5 – Kudos LG.
