An iPhone 4 could be the key to solving the tragic event that took place in an art gallery in Ankara. There, a 22-year old police officer murdered a Russian Ambassador triggering the alarms of the international community.
The off-duty police officer Mevlut Mert Altintas shot the Russian ambassador to Ankara, Andrei Karlov, several times in a horrible crime witnessed by many people on live TV last Monday, in a well-known art gallery in Ankara, Turkey.
After a week of investigations led by Russian and Turkish authorities, they are now focusing all their efforts to solve this horrendous crime by trying to unlock the shooter’s personal cell phone, an iPhone 4 that was found on him after Turkish police officers took him down minutes after the initial shooting.
Authorities are trying to crack the four-digit code to access all the content the cell phone holds, in order to clarify the mystery that lies behind such a brutal crime that shocked the entire world. So far, all the attempts to crack the code have been unsuccessful.
Is it possible to unlock an iPhone 4 without the password?
As many people know, the iPhone 4 is not the latest iPhone on the market these days, therefore it does not count with all the technological security that a much modern device would have.
This cell phone works with older versions of iOS, such as iOS 5 or maybe 6. This is why it should be relatively easy for authorities to unlock the device, as Apple started to encrypt its data with the launch of iOS 8.
So far, the attempts to crack the PIN code have been unsuccessful, which is why Russia has decided to send a team of expert technicians in the field to unlock the device.
Is Apple helping with the case?
Some people are wondering if Turkish authorities have requested Apple’s help to crack the code, and it does not seem the case; as Russian authorities should be perfectly capable of unlocking a device like the iPhone 4.
However, neither the officials nor the Cupertino-based company have said anything about any kind of requests.
It is also important to remember that Apple couldn’t unlock the device used by the killers in San Bernardino shooting, where 14 people died and more than 20 were injured.
When the FBI and the NSA requested Apple’s help, they explained they could not do it due to iOS security measures.
Many international news agencies from the middle east have reported the words shouted by the murderer after being put down, expressing sympathy and respect for all the victims of the war in Aleppo, Syria.
