Lucasfilm has revealed the official poster for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and announced the release of a new trailer. Rogue One’s director Gareth Edwards made a special appearance in the weekly The Star Wars Show to confirm the news.
The latest Star Wars Show episode also announced Marvel’s Star Wars: Doctor Aphra comic book series will replace Star Wars: Darth Vader, also from Marvel. Star Wars: Darth Vader, released in 2015, is set between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. The 25 issue series focuses in Darth Vader. Its final issue appeared yesterday.
Star Wars: Doctor Aphra features fan-favorite Doctor Aphra. Most notably, she helped Darth Vader acquire a personal army of battle droids shortly after the Battle of Yavin. The human female is a supporting character in all-new stories by writer Kieron Gillen and artist Kev Walker. Star Wars: Doctor Aphra will debut in December.
Additionally, a tie-in novel to Rogue One will provide a backstory to the film. Catalyst: A Rogue One Story is set a few years before the events of Rogue One. The novel, written by veteran Star Wars novelist James Luceno, has a November release date.
Rogue One is finally ready after controversial reshoots
Virtually completed since February, several weeks of pre-scheduled reshoots during June set off the alarms. Reports suggested Rogue One was in major trouble. Screenwriter Tony Gilroy was brought in to spearhead the reshoots as well as retool the ending of the film. He also did extensive re-writes on the script and was present on set during filming of crucial scenes.
Actress Felicity Jones, who plays the lead role, assured these kind of things are normal and that reshoots are no big deal. Meanwhile, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said everything was part of shooting schedule.
Rogue One’s theatrical poster is a first in the franchise
The first stand-alone Star Wars Anthology film also has a maiden female-focused poster. Rogue One’s poster is the first in the franchise to feature a woman so prominently. Felicity Jones’ character (Jyn Erso) captures all the attention. Not even a spectral Darth Vader and the Death Star in the background can eclipse her.
In addition to the film’s star duo, the theatrical poster includes Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker), Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen) and K-2SO (Alan Tudyk). Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed), Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), Baze Malbus (Wen Jiang) and Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn) are also featured.
Beneath them, viewers can see Imperial forces on the paradisiacal planet Scarif. Everything from a Star Destroyer to AT-ACT walkers, TIE fighters and Stormtroopers appear in the amazing-looking poster.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story revolves around the Rebel group that stole the plans for the Death Star. The blockbuster hits theaters on December 16, while its new trailer debuts later today.
