Pokémon GO Christmas update adds gen 2 babies & Holiday Pikachu

On Monday, Niantic announced new baby Pokémon would make their way into Pokémon Go starting today. Pichu, Togepi, and other Gen 2 baby Pokémon will hatch from eggs players pick up at Pokéstops.

Niantic also revealed a Holiday Pikachu would be available in the game as part of a limited event until December 29. These special Pikachu will appear wearing a “festive hat” in the wild.

It is unclear if the addition of baby Pokémon from the second generation of creatures and the Holiday Pikachu event will be all Niantic has to offer for Christmas.

Fans expected a big Christmas update of some sort that would see legendary Pokémon finally coming to the game or the full rollout of Gen 2 monsters.

It remains to be seen if Niantic meets the expectations of players this Holiday season.

How to catch a Holiday Pikachu in Pokémon GO

Holiday Pikachu are rare Pikachu that wear festive holiday hats to celebrate the season, according to Niantic.

The developing team said the exclusive yellow mice would be available starting December 29 at 10 a.m. PST. Players can find Holiday Pikachu around the globe at any time, and there are no special tricks. They can catch them as usual.

These new Pikachu have no particular attributes that people know of, but as more players set out to catch and train them, they might find some unique traits.

Enter 2nd Gen baby Pokémon

Although Togepi and Pichu are the only explicitly confirmed baby Pokémon, Niantic also said players would find “several other Pokémon that were originally discovered in the Johto Region in Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver video games.”

Fans of the franchise may have a hunch about which other Pokémon may start hatching from eggs starting today.

The second generation of Pokémon games was notorious for the introduction of the breeding system. This in-game mechanism was the only way to obtain some exclusive baby Pokémon back in the day.

Is there a list?

Apart from Pichu and Togepi, Pokémon Gold and Silver also added Cleffa, Igglybuff, Tyrogue, Smoochum, Elekid, and Magby.

These baby creatures serve as pre-evolutions to Pokémon of the first generation like Pikachu, Clefairy, Jigglypuff, Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, Jynx, Electabuzz, and Magmar. Togepi, on the other hand, has no link to Gen 1 and it evolves into Togetic.

Where can I get Gen 2 Pokémon eggs?

The only way to get the Gen 2 Pokémon eggs is to find them at Pokéstops and then hatching them to see which other monsters apart from Pichu and Togepi have landed on Pokémon GO.

Since the new Pokémon eggs have only been out for a few hours, it is still a mystery if all of the Gen 2-baby Pokémon are available and how long of a distance players will have to walk to hatch them.

Most speculate that none of the new eggs will hatch at 2 km, starting at distances of 5 km and, in some cases, most likely hatching at 10 km.
