Nissan took the wraps off its new Sentra earlier this Tuesday at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The vehicle will launch under the NISMO performance brand of the Japanese automaker, and it will hit the streets sometime during 2017.
The Sentra NISMO unveiling follows the introduction of the Juke Black Pearl and the Versa Note hatchback by Nissan at the auto expo on Monday. The new Sentra debuted alongside a ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ Limited Edition Rogue SUV.
NISMO is the division of Nissan that focuses on motorsports design and enhanced performance for racing circuits. Nissan stated the 2017 Sentra NISMO would arrive in January to the U.S. and that it will start under the $25,000 mark.
2017 Nissan Sentra NISMO: Specs and features
The new Sentra NISMO shares much of its DNA with its Nissan-branded brother, but the Japanese manufacturer built much more on top of the legendary car. The compact sedan has a history spanning nearly 50 years and eight generations, leaving aside the earlier Datsun models that preceded the Sentra lineup.
Nissan NISMO’s Sentra looks and feels much like the standard 2017 Sentra, but it packs quite the power under the hood thanks to the team of engineers at the specialized subdivision.
The first major distinction between the regular Sentra and this new NISMO iteration is the engine. The 2017 NISMO Sentra runs on a turbocharged 1.6-liter Direct Injection Engine (DIG), developed in-house by the tuning team.
The flagship engine technology from Nissan delivers up to 177 lb-ft of torque and 188 horsepower on the NISMO Sentra. The car comes with two transmission alternatives: either a 6-speed manual transmission or a premium Xtronic Continuously Variable Transmission.
Nissan’s Sentra NISMO will feature the latest infotainment system from the company. NissanConnect will be available on the 5.8-inch display of the vehicle, along with Navigation and dedicated Nissan applications.
The car also comes equipped with Nissan Voice Recognition, SiriusXM Traffic, Travel Link, and an audio system with 8 Bose speakers for an immersive sound experience on the Sentra NISMO.
Nissan reveals new 2017 Sentra NISMO at Los Angeles Auto Show
Michael Bunce, VP of Product Planning for Nissan North America, claimed that the new 2017 Sentra NISMO would be very popular in the United States, and especially among West Coast drivers.
Bunce said the new Sentra “will attract new customers not currently considering Sentra-enthusiasts looking for a fun-to-drive vehicle with a sports image yet at an attainable price point. Sentra NISMO takes us back to Nissan’s roots of compact performance sedans.”
The company said the 2017 Nissan Sentra NISMO would be available in January 2017, with a starting price under $25,000. Nissan is showcasing its new vehicles at the Los Angeles Auto Show until November 18.
