Microsoft to recall faulty Surface Pro power cables

Microsoft is aiming to replace the power cords for its older-model Surface Pro tablets, as there have been reports of overheating.

As a result of damage caused by AC power cords being wound too tightly, twisted or pinched over an extended period of time, a very small proportion of Surface Pro customers have reported issues with their AC power cord. We will be releasing details of how customers can obtain a free replacement cable shortly.” a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed when asked to comment on this recall.

Will all Surface Pro faulty cables be recalled?

As reported by Channelnomics Europe, on January 19, Microsoft would announce a voluntary recall of its AC power supplies for Surface Pro, Surface Pro 2 and Surface Pro 3 models, sold before July 2015. The report also said that Redmond has scheduled to announce this information by January 22.

The recall is meant for those power cords that have been bent or wrapped sharply and repeatedly. The recall is, however, not expected to target Surface Pro 4, which was launched by Microsoft in fall last year and also the non-pro Surface devices. This intel was also passed on by Channelnomics Europe.

In U.S., the story is a bit different, as Microsoft will be providing the free power cord exchanges for Surface Pro, Pro 2 and Pro 3 models, sold prior to March 2015, as clarified by the company spokesperson.

This will be a worldwide voluntary recall. The site with more information about the specifics of the recall should be available sometime, shortly,” the spokesperson said.

It will be interesting to see if Microsoft takes any further actions, as far as this recall is concerned.
