Mercedes-Benz and its performance division AMG unveiled the new GT Concept supercar at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show this week. The vehicle packs a hybrid drive system and offers over 800 horsepower in a four-door coupe.

The German automaker arrived at the Swiss capital with more than just an impressive sports car to show. The main Daimler subsidiary is also exhibiting a new E-Class Cabriolet, the luxury G650 Landaulet SUV, and two X-Class pickup models.

Other industry leaders also bringing supercars to the Geneva Motor Show include Ferrari, Lamborghini, and McLaren. Volvo, Volkswagen, Mitsubishi, Subaru, and Jaguar Land Rover are playing it safe with the debut of new SUVs.

Mercedes-AMG GT Concept: Specs and design

It seems like the new GT Concept was the four-door coupe model rumored to be revealed this week. The latest Mercedes-AMG looks also like the CLS-inspired car that people also speculated would make an appearance at the show.

The high-performance vehicle sports a reinterpretation of the signature design from the Mercedes-AMG lineup. The overall body looks like a slicker version of the CLS chassis, with more stylized lines along the sides.

The front fascia and the back of the car also received an overhaul since the last iteration of a collaborative GT model between the two automakers. The GT Concept is in the exhibition in Hot Red at the Geneva show floor.

Although the model looks nearly ready for production, Mercedes-AMG is only introducing some of the new features that may come to future cars developed under the joint brand.

For example, the GT Concept does away with side mirrors and replaces them with “mirror cams.” These miniature cameras barely come out from the sides of the car, and they display rear view footage in the central panel.

However, the greatest advancement comes under the hood. The Mercedes-Benz GT Concept has a hybrid powertrain that comprises a turbo V8 gas engine and a 600 kWh electric engine.

For optimal performance, the car uses both drive systems, although drivers can choose to use just one or the other. Using this mode, the supercar can go from 0 to 60 mph in just three seconds.

Mercedes-AMG GT Concept: Availability and release date

Unfortunately, the Mercedes-AMG GT Concept is just that for now, a concept. A production model could roll out in 2019, although some enthusiasts say it might release in late 2018 at best.

The supercar will, presumably, be available on demand from the automakers themselves at a yet undetermined price tag. People take for granted it will come out in Europe and North America, with other markets coming later.
