A new hero will soon take over our screens. The upcoming Marvel series ‘Iron Fist’ will premiere on the streaming platform Netflix on March 17, 2017. The media giant announced the upcoming show debut through its official YouTube channel.
‘Iron Fist’ represents, for now, the final piece of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe on Netflix. It is the fourth New York City hero to come to the small screen by the hand of the streaming giant, joining Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage as minor figures in the superhero scene.
The reveal on YouTube was also paired with a Twitter teaser image, showing the title character portrayed by Finn Jones ready to take a punch on an unsuspecting enemy waiting for the hit. “Open heart. Closed fist,” were the only words that accompanied the image.
Iron Fist’s origins
Out of all the four heroes that comprise Netflix’s small portion of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, ‘Iron Fist’ is perhaps the one with the most traditional origin.
Whereas Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage all gained their abilities through failed experiments, training, and mutations, Iron Fist was granted his signature power through a near-divine test.
Born Daniel Rand, ‘Iron Fist’ begins to walk the path of a superhero at the ripe age of nine. His billionaire father Wendell Rand discovered the mythical city of K’un L’un during his youth and took his son and wife to visit it again as a successful businessman.

However, a tragic accident left the young Daniel an orphan during their travels to find the city once more. K’un L’un natives eventually rescue Dan and take him to their lord and ruler Yü-Ti, who in turn takes him under his wing and instructs a legendary master to teach Rand the way of the Iron Fist.
After ten years of training, he becomes the ultimate martial artist and takes on a mystical challenge to prove his worthiness: fighting and killing a dragon with his bare hands. The power of the dragon marks him with his iconic chest tattoo and grants him the destructive and healing powers of the Iron Fist.
‘Iron Fist’ will join the rest of Netflix’s heroes in ‘The Defenders’
In the TV adaptation, Finn Jones will play Marvel’s ‘Iron Fist.’ It is unknown if the series will stick to its comic origins, but the New York City hero will fight crime using his incredible powers.
‘Daredevil,’ ‘Jessica Jones,’ and ‘Luke Cage’ will join ‘Iron Fist’ in a separate, limited Netflix miniseries called ‘The Defenders.’ Independently, the shows have already set up intertwined storylines that will make the team assemble on late 2017.
