On Tuesday, Marvel announced a deal with ABC to develop a new superhero show based on ‘The Inhumans’ comics. The agreement also contemplates a premiere of the first two episodes on IMAX theaters on September 2017.

The upcoming series will join ‘Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD’ in the network’s programming.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe continues expanding on Netflix as well with the slated debuts of ‘Iron Fist’ and ‘The Defenders’ also in late 2017.

Marvel has only announced the show, and it has yet to disclose details about ‘The Inhumans’ plot or cast.

Production should start soon if it intends to meet the September premiere deadline, though, so fans can expect casting announcements in the coming weeks.

Who are Marvel’s  ‘Inhumans’?

‘The Inhumans’ are a race of unique human beings belonging to an ancient race and civilization. Their empire is located on the fictional island of Attilan, where a strict caste system rules society and leaves them mostly isolated from the rest of the world.

Inhumans are the result of experiments carried out thousands of years ago by the Kree race of aliens, the same enemies featured in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ led by Ronan the Accuser.

The objective of the experiments was to test the effects of the Terrigen Mist on the population of Inhumans. As you might expect, the results came in the form of superhuman abilities and powers that made of the Inhumans a force of nature on Earth.

The Inhuman Royal Family are the rulers of Attilan society. Their king, Black Bolt, possesses a hypersonic voice capable of creating incredible shockwaves when he speaks. For this reason, he communicates using sign language or just refrains from all communication.

His wife, Medusa, is the queen of Attila and the Inhumans. Similar to the mythological creature, Medusa has a unique type of red hair that she can manipulate at will to use as she pleases.

Other members of the Inhuman Royal Family include Crystal, who can control earth, air, fire, and water. Gorgon, whose animal legs can stomp hard enough to create earthquakes; and Lockjaw, a teleporting bulldog.

How will ‘The Inhumans’ integrate to the MCU?

Season 2 of ‘Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD’ revolved around a storyline featuring the Inhumans and a mystical artifact tied to the Terrigen Mist.

While none of the Royal Family members appeared on the show, its mentioning was enough for fans to make theories about the future of the series. It is certain now that ‘The Inhumans’ won’t see a film adaptation or at least not in the foreseeable future.

The MCU will most likely tie both ‘Agents of SHIELD’ and ‘The Inhumans’ at some point, either through individual storylines in each show or by making a crossover episode or mini-series.

‘The Inhumans’ will premiere its first two episodes on IMAX theaters nationwide in the U.S., and then six episodes will follow in ABC. The live-action Marvel series debuts in Fall 2017.
