Earlier this Tuesday, August 17, the former Hollywood couple Johnny Depp and Amber Heard reached an agreement out of court for $7 million to settle their divorce after a conflictive couple of months and a short-lived marriage.

The couple issued a joint statement to put out the fire around the highly controversial divorce case, which involved infidelity allegations, restraining orders, and domestic abuse. Depp and Heard said that “neither party has made false accusations for financial gain. There was never any intent of physical or emotional harm”.

Reports claim that the 30-year-old actress intends to donate her settlement proceeds to charity, further consolidating the couple’s earlier remarks and Heard’s integrity both as an artist and a public figure.

Johnny Depp was with Vanessa Paradis when he met Amber Heard

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard first met while filming “The Rum Diary” back in 2009, a movie based on the Hunter S. Thompson’s novel of the same name. While the film was relatively small, it sparked some controversy for its graphic depiction of cockfighting.

The American actor then separated from Vanessa Paradis in mid-2012 following 14 years of relationship, the longest one Depp has ever held. Depp and the French actress have two children together: Lily-Rose and John Christopher Depp.

Shortly after his separation, Johnny Depp and the “Friday Night Lights” star Amber Heard began dating formally, confirming rumors and reports from tabloids and media outlets about the couple on the eve of Depp’s split with Paradis.

After three years of dating, the couple tied the knot in February 2015, holding first a small ceremony in Los Angeles, and then celebrating big time at the actor’s private island in the Bahamas.

A little over a month after their marriage, the couple made it to the headlines around the world for starring on the infamous dog incident in Australia.

The couple brought their two Yorkshire Terriers undeclared to the country, which resulted in media scandal at a government level, a hefty fine for forging documents, and a public apology.

During this time and later in December 2015, Amber Heard had also suffered some episodes of verbal abuse and threats from an allegedly temperamental Depp. Accusations of infidelity went back and forth between the couple, notoriously including the involvement of “Fargo” star Billy Bob Thornton.

However, the last straw would come in recent months, when the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star reportedly threw Heard’s own cell phone at her face after not seeing each other for over a month. This incident prompted the Texas actress to file a restraining order against the 52-year-old Golden Globe winner and to file for divorce alleging domestic abuse and irreconcilable differences.

The $7 million settlement puts an end to 15 months of “intensely passionate and at times volatile” marriage. Johnny Depp will reprise his role as Jack Sparrow in the fifth installment of “Pirates of the Caribbean” while Amber Heard will star in DC’s “Justice League” adaptation as Mera. Both films premiere in 2017.
