The co-founder and Chairman of the Chinese networking company TP-Link Jeffrey Chao announced its new Neffos X Series of smartphones. The upcoming X1 and X1 Max Android devices join the newfound lineup of mobile handsets by TP-Link’s Neffos.

The Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin (IFA) 2016 was the stage where Chao gave the official TP-Link conference earlier this week on Thursday, September 1. The product reveal joins those of LG, Samsung, Acer, Sony and more as the week-long event unfolds in the German capital.

TP-Link first introduced the Neffos brand in late 2015 as a separate venture from its networking empire dedicated to the manufacturing and retail of connectivity solution products.

Neffos revealed its three first smartphones in January 2016, a lineup that has since expanded to seven devices with the new X1 and X1 Max.

TP-Link X1 and X1 Max: Design and Display

While the new TP-Link Neffos devices are nearly identical, there are some differences between the X1 and the X1 Max worth addressing.

Both smartphones come with a dual-curved metallic back cover, designed exclusively by TP-Link to achieve the most comfortable holding experience for users. The handsets come available in two color options: Cloudy Grey and Sunrise Gold.

The X1 and X1 Max both sport IPS displays, but the X1 Max has a bigger, full-HD 1920 x 1080 5.5-inch screen whereas the X1 features a 5.0-inch 1280 x 720 screen. Both phones pack 2.5D glass displays and are just under 8-mm thick.

On the sleek-looking back, right under the camera, the X1 and X1 Max include a fingerprint scanner with ‘ultra-fast’ unlocking capabilities with a 0.2-second reaction time.

The X1 Max, on the other hand, starts with the premium configuration of the X1 and offers a higher-tier model that packs 64 GB of storage and 4 GB of RAM. All of these versions support additional memory expansion up to 128 GB.

Both devices carry a locally-developed MediaTek Helio P10 octa-core processor, but the X1 is limited to 1.8 GHz of speed while the X1 Max goes up to 2.0 GHz. The two TP-Link smartphones also have the same rear and front cameras, with 13 MP and 5 MP respectively in addition to PDAF support.

A 3,000-mAh battery powers the X1 Max while the X1 packs a 2,250 mAh battery. Both support fast charging, dual SIMs, and will run on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The TP-Link X1 will cost €199 and the X1 Max €249, approximately $230 and $280 respectively for U.S. markets. The devices will be available for purchase in Q4 2016 according to TP-Link.
