Square Enix unveiled on Saturday a couple of new images of Final Fantasy VII Remake at MAGIC Monaco 2017. Game director Tetsuya Nomura showed screenshots of Cloud and Barret fighting against the Guard Scorpion, FF7’s first boss.
The upcoming remake has been in development for quite some time, and it was announced at E3 2015 as a PlayStation 4 exclusive. The game’s director said last month the game still has a long way to go in terms of development.
Nomura also shared some pictures of Kingdom Hearts 3, a title that has been in development for even longer. Announced in the summer of 2013, fans expect the game finally comes out this year, although its lackluster graphics don’t inspire them much excitement.
Final Fantasy VII Remake still needs a lot of work
In spite of some great-looking images showcased in Monaco over the weekend, “there’s still a ways to go” for the remake Final Fantasy fans have been waiting for.
The director of the game shared two stills from Final Fantasy 7 Remake, one shows Cloud in taking cover behind some crates and boxes showing the scenario will affect combat, while the other features Barret and the protagonist fighting the Guard Scorpion.
Of course, both pictures offer significantly enhanced graphics in comparison with the original title. The first Final Fantasy VII came out 20 years ago, and this year also marks the 30th anniversary of the franchise.
Tetsuya Nomura said the developing team was working hard on the combat system. They want it to be fluid and innovative, but there are many challenges to overcome. It seems there is a bug that makes grenades hurt allies, though Nomura said they were going to fix that.
About the scene with the Guard Scorpion, Nomura apologized for not showing video footage after company executives forbid him from doing so. He said some of the scenery surrounding the boss would be destructible in the remake, and that the menus are not ready yet.
Yoshinori Kitase promised the game would keep the good stuff
During an interview with Gematsu in late January, FF7 Remake producer Yoshinori Kitase said they would be keeping all the elements from the original game that made it so popular among fans around the world.
The producer did not shy away from innovation, though, saying they had to keep up with next-generation standards regarding graphics and that they are looking into implementing some features of the recently released Final Fantasy XV.
“THERE’S STILL A LOT I CAN’T SAY BUT WE WON’T BE REMOVING ANY PARTS OF THE ORIGINAL FINAL FANTASY VII THAT WAS WELL-RECEIVED,” Kitase said about the Materia system.
Neither executive provided any details about a release date for the game, but stay tuned for more news about FF7 Remake when the E3 hits Los Angeles in June.
