Video game developer EA DICE made available a new unified Battlefield user interface (UI) for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. It will roll out with main series games Battlefield 4 and Battlefield 1, expected for release this year. Spin-off title Battlefield Hardline will get the update later.

The UI will provide a more intuitive and centralized experience for Battlefield games and will land through a 4GB patch for the Sony and Microsoft gaming consoles. It predominantly includes a cleaner menu system, easier multiplayer experience in the Squads game mode, and a recommendation engine that suggests maps and modes.

The menu update comes with big icons and clear white text. Faster navigation is also a plus, allowing to scroll tabs using shoulder buttons. Battlelog got removed, and the menu now allows players to change from one Battlefield title to another.

Open beta up on August 31

Battlefield 1 was officially unveiled back in May via a Twitch live stream. It showcased a reveal trailer of the game. The open beta kicks off August 31 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. It will allow the development team to patch major technical bugs, glitches, and crashes before the game’s official launch.

Despite its title, the upcoming first-person shooter video game will be the fourteenth installment in the Battlefield franchise. Battlefield 1 is also set to be the first main entry in the series since Battlefield 4 in 2013 and EA’s first World War I video game since Wings of Glory in 1994.

According to game designer Daniel Berlin, the development team picked the World War I setting as they believed that weapons and gadgets used during that conflict would suit players with different playstyles. Berlin also said the game’s story will be told through multiple protagonists and will explore the experiences of war heroes.

Battlefield 1 in stores October 21

The game will be released worldwide on October 21 for Microsoft Windows (PC), PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It was named Battlefield 1 because they consider World War I to be the beginning of warfare.

EA revealed the game’s Premium Pass would include early access to new multiplayer maps, four digital expansions as well as new weapons, dog tags, and skins. An $130 Ultimate Edition will contain the deluxe edition of Battlefield 1, the Premium Pass, pre-order bonuses, three days early access, the Red Baron Pack, the Lawrence of Arabia Pack, and five Battlepacks.

Meanwhile, the Collector’s Edition package will come with a statue of a Harlem Hell Fighter, a downloadable content code, and a Steelbook case.
