Dell Computers has officially revealed the 2-in-1 version of the best-selling XPS 13 notebook. The new computer will keep its signature edge-to-edge display, but this time it will fold back into an all-purpose tablet.
Initial specs are the same as its non-foldable predecessor, but its new design offers some unexpected perks. The 2-in-1 will premiere, like most gadgets, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, this week.
Images of the device have already surfaced on Dell’s official website. The laptop will do have some competition on the 2-in-1 department, mostly from HP’s newer Spectre models. Many online reviewers consider the XPS 13 to be one of the best Windows 10 laptops available.
2-in-1 XPS 13’s specifications and cost
The new convertible XPS 13 packs a KabyLake Intel Y-series technology and will feature a starting spec sheet of 4GB RAM, 128GB internal storage, an i5-7Y54 chip, and 1080p resolution.
This entry-level model starts at $999, but users can upgrade to a model with twice the memory and storage for $1,199. Other available upgrades are a 3,200 x 1,800 resolution, an i7-7Y75, up to 16GB RAM and 1TB of space.
The laptop also comes with dual camera lenses placed at the bottom of the screen, which become a top-screen webcam when customers flip the notebook.
The XPS 13 might feature a little less power and connectivity
The Y-series chips, according to reviews, might signify a power loss from their better counterparts, the U-series, featured in the non-convertible XPS variant.
The 2-in-1, however, will feature a “dynamic power mode” aimed for better performance in harsher conditions, according to Dell’s Consumer Services Director, Randall Heaton.
The XPS 13 convertible notebook has a battery life of 15 hours, two USB-C ports (one with Thunderbolt), a microSD slot, and Windows Hello compatibility with the fingerprint reader support. Infrared camera features will come later, says the manufacturer.
A release date is not available yet. However, it is very likely that Dell will give one after the CES event. The product will launch in the United States first as an exclusive.
