Fallout 4 and The Elder Scroll V: Skyrim are the real victims
Bethesda Game Studios revealed today Sony Interactive Entertainment will not allow mods for Fallout 4 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – Special Edition in the PlayStation 4.
According to the statement published on Bethesda’s website, the company was ready to offer mod support on PS4 but the discussions with Sony led nowhere. Bethesda promised to keep the users updated on the issue.
The video game developer expressed its disappointment over Sony’s decision given the work put into the project and the time fans had been waiting for mod support to arrive. Bethesda hopes to find other ways for user mods to reach its PlayStation audience.
However, until Sony allow Bethesda to offer proper mod support for PS4, the content for Fallout 4 and Skyrim on PlayStation 4 will not be available. Meanwhile, Microsoft didn’t miss the chance to promote their platform and boasted the Xbox One’s mod support for the titles.
Bethesda launched mod support for both games this year
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was originally released worldwide in 2011 on Microsoft Windows (PC), PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. On the other hand, Fallout 4 launched last year for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
Last April, Bethesda revealed the mods created by PC players via The Creation Kit would get released for Xbox One and PS4 versions of Fallout 4 in May and June of this year, respectively.
And in June, Bethesda announced The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – Gold Edition would arrive at the Xbox One and PS4 in October. The remastered version of the game was meant to come with full mod support as well.
Why is sony blocking Fallout 4 and Skyrim mods on the PS4?
Bethesda launched the mod support for the Xbox One in May, as expected, but the PS4 release was postponed due to some issues with the sound and textures. However, PS4 mods were available in the beta in June.
Things didn’t get better since the first delay. Bethesda’s vice president of marketing and PR, Pete Hines, explained his company was working with Sony and that mods were under evaluation. He then implied Sony was the one holding things up.
PS4 mod support didn’t have a release date by August. Hines indicated in a September interview Bethesda was still trying to make mods happen. However, now that Sony has supposedly barred PS4 mods it seems they could never arrive at neither Fallout 4 nor Skyrim Special Edition.
