At Computex 2017 in Taipei this Tuesday, ASUS unveiled the latest laptops of their Republic of Gamers (ROG) lineup. Among them there is the ASUS ROG Strix GL702ZC, the first gaming laptop on the market to pack an AMD Ryzen processor.
Yesterday, it unveiled a new series of VivoBook and ZenBook laptops as well. However, it was the 2-in-1 ZenBook Flip S the one who stole the show, breaking the record as the thinnest device of its category so far and beating rivals in benchmark tests.
AMD’s Ryzen chips not only outperform Intel’s Kaby Lake processors, but they are also more affordable. The ROG Strix GL702ZC is just one of many upcoming desktops and laptops packing Ryzen chips.

ASUS ROG Strix GL702ZC: Specs and features
The latest addition to the Republic of Gamers lineup is not the flashiest regarding design, but it does include some top-of-the-line technology that even some desktops don’t have.
The ROG Strix GL702ZC comes in a black aluminum casing, and it has a stylized back with the ROG logo center front. It is just 1.3 inches thick, and 7 lbs light and the keyboard lights up in red except for the WASD keys, which have different colored backlights.
ASUS’ new gaming laptop has a 17.3-inch IPS display with three possible configurations: 4K resolutions (3840 x 2160) at 60 Hz refresh rate, or two Full HD (1920 x 1080) options at either 75 Hz or 120 Hz. All support AMD FreeSync to compensate for potential hiccups.
Processing power comes courtesy of AMD’s Ryzen lineup, which offers three chips for the new ROG Strix: a Ryzen 7 1700, a Ryzen 5 1600, or a Ryzen 3 1200. AMD’s Radeon RX 580 takes care of the graphics workload given that Vega cards are not out yet. That GPU has 8 GB of GDDR5 memory.
RAM on the ROG Strix tops at 32 GB DDR4 at 2,400 MHz, and the laptop has two drive slots for potential storage expansion with either an extra hard drive or SSD. It ships with one of those occupied by an SSD of up to 512 GB of capacity.
Other than that, ASUS’ connectivity solutions include Wireless AC at 867 Mbps and Bluetooth 4.1 It also has three USB 3.0 ports, one USB-C port, an SD card reader, a Gigabit Ethernet port, a DisplayPort, an HDMI slot, and a headphone jack.
