Forget about all the rumors that you may have heard about the LG G5 – the device has finally launched at MWC 2016. Earlier at MWC, Samsung used to steal the show, with LG releasing its devices in a separate event. However, this time, the company managed to create a stir that rivalled its South Korean competitor.

This being said, the LG G5 has taken a big departure from LG’s earlier flagship phones and it might be one of the most original and revolutionary smartphones we’ve seen in recent years. There have been a handful of new features and specs, and here are the top five ones that we found the most exciting.

Metal Body

Earlier, LG has shuttled back and forth a bit between plastic and premium materials, unlike Samsung which stuck to cheap-feeling plastic and refused to change until last year when the Galaxy S6 moved to glass and aluminum.

For this year, LG has produced the most premium device, yet. It features a full metal design that puts it on par with its other rivals.

Removable Battery

There is one thing that other smartphone giants like Samsung and Apple are neglecting to add to their devices; that is a removable battery. So, if this is a feature that is a must-have for you, the LG G5 is an impeccable option.

The LG G5 has a humungous 2,800 mAh battery that is large enough to last you a full day with mixed usage. However, if you are a heavy user and never want to run out of battery juice, you can simply swipe out the battery for a fully recharged one in a few seconds.

Expansion slot

This is a trick that you may not find in any other smartphone, this year. Modularity is something that LG has emphasised on when it comes to the G5. With specially made module accessories, that you need to buy separately, you can completely transform the G5 in the blink of an eye.

Two such modules were highlighted by the company, one was the  CAM Plus, a special camera accessory designed to “deliver a comfortable grip and convenient control of a DSLR.” It offers autofocus, exposure lock and physical buttons for the shutter and zoom features. It can also be used as an external battery pack that has a capacity of 1,200 mAh.

The other is Hi-Fi Plus with B&O Play which transforms the G5 into a Hi-Fi audio player that supports 32-bit 384 KHz high-definition audio files.

Power and specs

The specs of the device may not be too different from the other devices that are scheduled to launch this year, but, that in no form makes what it has to offer any less exciting. Spec highlights include a quad-core 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 process, 4GB of RAM and Android 6.0 Marshmallow. That, along with a 5.3-inch AMOLED display features quad HD resolution and 554 ppi pixel density do make the whole device much more appealing.

This is the last point on our list but is definitely not the least. The G5 will not be alone when it is released, later this year. LG has unveiled a wide range of very cool companion devices that will stretch the G5’s feature set beyond what it can achieve with the modular expansion slot.

A few of these gadgets that you should look out for are the 360 CAM, which records 360-degree photos and videos for a virtual reality experience; the 360 VR, a virtual reality headset accessory; the Smart Controller, which lets users control a drone and watch its video stream on the G5’s display; and the Rolling Bot, a little ball robot that rolls around and captures images and videos with its 8-megapixel camera.
