Sony Corp. Ord. is yet to announce its late 2017 flagship phones, the Sony Xperia Z6 and Z6 Compact, but rumors are saying they will represent huge spec bump from Sep. 2015’s Xperia Z5 and Z5 Compact.
The Japanese company might revamp the design of the Z5 for an Apple iPhone 6 metal and glass style, but there is no release date for Sony’s next flagship phone yet.
TechRadar previously reported Sony plans to ditch the Z line altogether for the Xperia X Range. The outlet believes the next flagship of the company will be called Xperia XR.
While Sony finishes its next smartphone lineup, customers should check the Xperia Z5 and Z5 Compact, both phones boasting an excellent performance and top end cameras for an affordable price of $557 and $379, respectively.
Xperia Z6 and Z6 rumored specs
The Z5 model had a 5.2-inches IPS LCD with 1080p resolution, while the new handset will probably have either a 5.2 or a 5.3-inches Triluminos LED display with a resolution of 2K. The Compact version will come with a smaller 4.8-inches display with Full HD resolution.
Both phones will have a Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protecting the screen and the body. Likely, the Z6 will also have an iP68 certificate, which means it resists dust and sand, and it can hold up beyond 30 minutes under 1 meter of water.
The Z5 flagship had an eight-core Snapdragon 810 processor, but the Z6 might come with a Snapdragon 820 with four custom Kyro cores.
These Kyro cores will have a clock speed of 2.2 GHz. They are the first 64-bit custom cores from Qualcomm. According to Qualcomm, the Kyro cores deliver two times the performance of a Snapdragon 810.
The phones will pack an Adreno 530 GPU and either 3GB RAM, like the Z5 series, or 4GB RAM if Sony decides to upgrade.
As for the storage, the Z5 was released with 32GB onboard memory and a MicroSD slot. Sony might add up to 64GB in the new Z6 model and 32GB in the Compact version, with a microSD card up to 256GB.
Camera and battery
Sony Xperia Z5 series had a 23MP rear camera. It was an upgrade over previous 20.7MP camera which delivered clear and sharp photos. The camera features autofocus, OIS, HDR and records 4K video.
The next camera might receive a slight upgrade and reach 25MP resolutions with Dual Led flash on the rear side, autofocus, HDR, and OIS. The front camera will have 8MP, just like its predecessor.
Image and video quality will be better in the Z6 as the Snapdragon 820 has dual image signal processors. Lastly, it will use the same non-removable battery of 2900 mAh the Xperia Z5 features.
