Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) will release two or three new all-glass iPhones next year. Some reports say that the tech giant will stick with the usual 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch models, while others suggest a third never-before-seen 5-inch version will accompany them.
Whether they are two or three, one thing’s for sure: the iPhone 8s will bear glass covers and backs. Apple is counting on the major redesign to revive iPhone sales. Samsung’s exploding Galaxy Note 7 fiasco should also help iPhone’s sales to go upward.
The Cupertino-based company sold 45.5 million iPhones during the last 2016 quarter compared to the 48.05 million a year ago. iPhone revenue also went down from last year’s $32.2 billion to $28.2 billion.
In consequence, the Cupertino-based company had its first annual revenue decline since 2001. Apple’s fourth quarter earnings showed $46.9 billion in revenue and $9 billion in net income. A year ago, both figures were at $51.5 billion and $11.2 billion, respectively.
AppleInsider believes there’s no point in Apple releasing a 5-inch iPhone 8
Apple’s immediate plans are to deliver two iPhone 8 variants, being the standard 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch flagships, according to AppleInsider. However, the company’s inside source doesn’t rule out a future 5-inch version.
If AppleInsider’s source is right, Apple is set to unveil two flagship iPhone models next year, as it has been the case since the iPhone 6 series premiered in 2014. Like this year’s iPhone 7 duo, the iPhone 8 will come in 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch sizes.
It seems unlikely that Apple would make a medium-end iPhone. AppleInsider considers it wouldn’t offer any significant benefits in between the 4.7 inches and 5.5 inches version. An updated iPhone SE would be a smarter move for Apple than the 5-inch iPhone 8.
iPhone says goodbye to metal casings, hello to glass sandwich chassis
Meanwhile, Nikkei’s source said Apple all iPhone 8 models will have glass backs as well as glass covers. The rumored all-glass iPhones would depart from metal casings adopted by current Apple handsets.
Reportedly, Chinese companies Biel Crystal Manufactory and Lens Technology will supply all the glass backs and glass covers for the upcoming iPhone 8s. Apparently, a metal frame will hold together the glass front and back. Apple could use stainless steel to make the frame instead of aluminum.
Apple is set to make several changes as they look to remind customers why they fell in love with the first iPhone back in 2007. Hence, further iPhone 8 features could include wireless charging, no home button, and a 2.5-dimensional curved glass screen.
