The Chinese tech giant also renewed its series of mid-range laptops, the IdeaPad family. Consisting of six laptops (three models with Slim design alternatives), the upcoming lineup is for students who want both power and style. It launches in June, while the new Flex laptops will release later this month.

Lenovo has been making headlines recently after executives at Google I/O announced the company was one of the two strategic partners developing standalone Daydream headsets. The other one is HTC, and both of their devices are expected to launch later this year.

Lenovo Flex 5 laptops look the same but perform better

The Lenovo Flex 5 series brings the same two models again this year: a 14-inch and a 15.6-inch laptop, with the bigger of the two getting the most capable upgrade options.

Both 2-in-1s come in Onyx Black only and have 0.8-inch profiles. However, the smaller model weighs 3.9 lbs or 1.76 kg, while the one with the larger display tops at 4.4 lbs or 2 kg.

Speaking of screens, the Lenovo Flex 5 14” gets an FHD 1920 x 1080 IPS screen, but the 15.6” model supports a IPS display with up to UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) resolutions.

Other than those differences, the two models have the same support for the remaining specifications. Memory, graphics, storage and even battery life are the same, which may explain the price drop even when we are talking about a next-gen device.

Under the hood, both Lenovo Flex 5 laptops can pack up to 7th generation Intel Core i7-7500u processors, along with up to 16 GB of DDR4 RAM and NVIDIA GeForce 940MX graphics. PCIe SSD storage is supported up to 512 GB, while traditional hard drives top at 1 TB.

There is a USB-C slot, two USB 3.0 ports, and a 4-in-1 card reader on the Lenovo Flex 5 2-in-1s. A headphone jack and a fingerprint reader compatible with Windows Hello sign-in also come included.

Lenovo packs a dual microphone array along with the 720p HD camera on the Flex 5 series, and their 3-cell battery with 52 WH is comparably more long-lasting than other devices of their kind.

The new Lenovo Flex 5 is cheaper, and it launches in May

The Chinese giant is not increasing but dropping the price of the Flex 5 family for 2017. Last year models started at $879.99 and $929.99, but this year’s cost $719.99 and $829.99 respectively.

Lenovo says the new Flex 5 models will ship before the end of the month of May in the U.S., while the new IdeaPad lineup will debut in June.
