This month marks an important date for Riot Games as their biggest game yet, League of Legends, has achieved 100 million active users. This figure was registered in August when more than 100 million different users played League of Legends worldwide.

The last record registered by Riot Games was in 2014, the year in which the achieved an average of 67 million monthly users. League of Legends is one of the three biggest MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) present in the market alongside Dota 2 and Heroes of the Storm. So far MOBA games represent 35% of online gamers proving to be a very popular genre regarding video games.

For comparison, the figure shown by League’s closest competitor, Dota 2, was of 13 million unique players per month. The huge difference proves the success of Riot’s strategy of not letting the game be static but introduce changes every time it is possible.

“The idea that a lot of people would be pumped on that kind of experience was certainly something we didn’t predict,” said Brandon Beck, who is one the founders of League of Legends and currently holds a key position in Riot Games.

He explained that they never thought that their creation would be so successful but they are definitely going to keep polishing League of Legends in order to please fans.

Changes are on their way to keep the game interesting

So far a new teaser has been released featuring a new champion alongside new reworks for two old ones. These announcements have received positive reviews from fans as they believe that these characters will feature new mechanics never seen before in the game.

Also, Marc Merril, co-founder of League of Legends, has confirmed that a group of writers was hired in order to re-design all the story behind the characters and locations of the game. This changes will be implemented via character reworks and important additions to the battlefields featured in the game.

Lastly, the schedule for the classificatory groups for the League of Legends Championship Series (LCS) has been published on the website lolesports.com. This is world class event in which the best teams from every corner of the world gather to compete for a big money price and world recognition.

This is one of the first e-sport events that will be televised and will count with the support of some regular sports networks such as ESPN. This marks another important event in the schedule of League of Legend fans.

It seems that September is going to be one remarkable month for League of Legend players and their creators with all these interesting events happening simultaneously.
