Saturday Night Live returned last night with Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston reprising his role as Walter White for the show’s cold open. The sketch made fun of Donald Trump’s transition picks by having White pose as the new head of the DEA.
The new SNL episode continues to capitalize on the President-Elect and his decisions leading up to his inauguration on January 20. Trump’s appointees to lead the country have been raising concerns among the public.
However, this is the first episode of the season not to feature Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump. The actor’s impression has caused some controversy after the last few episodes, triggering reactions even from Trump himself.
John Cena hosted Saturday’s event along with Maren Morris as the musical guest. SNL will come back next Saturday for its final episode of the year.
Walter White is the latest of Trump’s picks on SNL
Bryan Cranston’s Emmy-winning character Walter White showed up on SNL as the head of the DEA under Trump’s administration.
The setting for Walter White to appear as DEA chief was a mockup interview during ‘The Lead,’ a CNN show hosted by Jake Tapper. Beck Bennet, who usually plays Mike Pence in the series, played Tapper while Kate McKinnon reprised her role as Trump’s campaign manager Kellyanne Conway.
The interview took a swing at some of Trump’s transition picks like Scott Pruit as the head of the Environmental Protection Agency and Andrew Puzder as Secretary of Labor.
The two chiefs have views contrasting the purpose of the position they now hold, such as not believing in climate change and not supporting minimum wage standards.
As such, Cranston’s Walter White claimed to be the man for the job since he had a pretty good knowledge of the DEA both “inside and out.” He also praised Trump for his high wall since that would keep competition out of the country.
The high school teacher turned drug kingpin supported Trump’s famous slogan in his way. “It’s time to make America cook again. We want to fill this nation with red, white, and a whole lot of blue,” White said.
The show went a bit further and made fun of the Pizzagate scandal later on during the Weekend Update sketch, addressing Donald Trump directly since the cast knew he was watching the show. Trump has not tweeted about it yet.
Saturday Night Live will host a Christmas Special on Wednesday, December 14 at 9 p.m. ET before finishing its 2017 run next Saturday. The final episode of the 42nd season will have Casey Affleck as host and Chance The Rapper as musical guest.
