Watch: Elon Musk details SpaceX’s Mars plans

Elon Musk is set to take the stage this Friday at the International Astronautical Congress in Adelaide, South Australia, to share updates about the ‘world’s biggest battery’ and SpaceX’s Mars mission.

The CEO of Tesla Inc. shared some images ahead of his talk at the Congress, on which he is expected to go further into detail about humans living on other planets. Of course, these plans start in the Red Planet, as other space agencies have also hinted.

Most people would argue Musk has more than enough on his plate already, with three companies under his belt and, somehow, spare time to head out to South Australia to show the world how he’s going to change it. That is, of course, if AI doesn’t kill us all first.

‘We choose to go to the moon’ redux?

Aside from plans for the world’s biggest battery, Elon Musk shared some images ahead of his IAC talk this Friday. Instagram posts by the executives shed some light on what he means when he talks about ‘Making Life Multiplanetary.’

The first picture he shared was of Moon Base Alpha, a project we speculate has to do with the proposed moon base he talked about earlier this summer at the ISS Research and Development conference.

Of course, this would be a quite enticing proposal coming from SpaceX, particularly at a time when space agencies like NASA might have already drafted similar plans, but are realistically decades away from even coming close to revealing them with a feasible timetable.

An initiative of this caliber coming from the private sector will certainly make some eyes around the world turn to SpaceX. NASA, for instance, has proposed a similar ‘deep space gateway’ in the surroundings of the Moon that will serve as a pit stop for spaceships before venturing into the far frontiers of our galaxy.

Elon Musk wants to make life ‘multiplanetary’

The second picture Elon Musk shared on his Instagram was of Mars City. Mars City appears to be a complex for the human settlers that will make their way into the Red Planet in the coming decades, and it shows a large dome with three or four standing spaceships nearby.

There are also astronauts and rovers in the pic, simulating what life would be like at Mars City. People would probably live under the geodesic dome, while the rockets in the surroundings would be there since their arrival and possibly in case of emergency.

Of course, this is all speculation, as the head of Tesla hasn’t taken the stage yet at the moment of this writing. You can tune into SpaceX’s official YouTube channel or watch Musk reveal his plans live on the video embedded at the top of this post.
