New Ford Mustang Shelby prototype test drives in Michigan

Ford introduced its first Mustang Shelby GT500 at The Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2011. Popular Mechanics

A recent video of what could be a 2018 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 prototype is causing rumors surrounding the automaker’s plans for future releases. Fan forum Mustang 6G uploaded a clip on its YouTube channel showing the alleged prototype cruising around Ford`s Dearborn Development Center in Michigan this Tuesday.

The car features camouflage and a wing in its rear, making it look like a sports vehicle. Ford has not made any official announcements about the video or nature of this prototype.

The model could be either the GT500 or a GT350

Mustang6G posted on its website a list of the Shelby GT500’s possible specs based on the YouTube clip and the forum’s sources. The vehicle would come with a 750 hp supercharged 5.2-liter cross-plane crank version of the flat-plane crank naturally-aspirated Voodoo V8 found in the current Shelby GT350.

However, the video’s audio doesn’t provide enough evidence of a turbo spool or forced induction of any type since the car was not moving at top speed, leading the forum to speculate that the prototype might be a 2018 Shelby GT350, according to the post.

A previous video lets a closer look

The automaker showcased a demo model of a reportedly 2014 Shelby GT500 at The Los Angeles Auto Show in 2013. AutoMotoTube posted a clip displaying the car’s exterior, with a “Super Snake” logo attached to the passenger’s door.

The vehicle had red painting, and its design resembled previous GT500 versions. It marked the last public and official sight of the vehicle, as Ford did not take it to any more exhibits.

The car featured a 202 miles per hour top speed thanks to a 32-V V8 supercharged engine. A 2013 model followed with significant upgrades such as LED tail lights, standard HID headlamps, and a new front end sheet metal. Besides, the Shelby had no grill, to ensure massive cooling due to its double fuel pumps – the first model came with only one pump. It remains as Ford’s most powerful Mustang to date.

Ford’s official releases include a new GT350

If Mustan6G’s leaks are proven right, the new Mustang Shelby GT500 will hit production at some point in 2018, and it’s expected to beat other muscle car competitors like the upcoming 650 hp Chevrolet Camara ZL1 and 707 hp Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat. Ford is currently promoting the 2017 Mustang Shelby GT350 on its official website, with a pre-order price of 24,645.
