Few had predicted the Underworld series would go this far. And yet, the trailer for the fifth installment of the saga, “Blood Wars” is out. The film is in production and is set to release on January 6, 2017, in U.S. cinemas before opening in UK theaters on February 3.

Kate Beckinsale reprises her role as the vampire death dealer Selene and picks up the plot after 2012’s Awakenings when humans discovered the existence of both lycans and vampires. Theo James – who plays “4” in the Divergent series – accompanies her as the second protagonist.

The action-packed trailer tells of a new war between the two mythical races, a war with more bloodshed and death than ever, and Selene is the key to ending the eternal struggle. Vampires need her blood to become invincible and turn the tide of the battle.

The 43-year-old actress must fend off persecutions from factions of both races that betrayed her. With the aid of David (Theo James) and his father (Charles Dance), her only allies, she takes it upon herself to stop the eternal war.

If not enough, some sort of Game of Thrones reunion will join the main cast: Charles Dance (Tywin Lannister), Tobias Menzies (Edmure Tully) and Lara Pulver (the voice of Lady Elissa Forrester in “Game of Thrones: A Telltale Series” game) all take part in secondary roles.

Former director of the franchise Len Wiseman, who has been married to Beckinsale for 11 years, is now acting as a producer. Meanwhile, the script is in the hands of Cory Goodman, a priest by day/writer by night, author of the texts of 2015’s “The Last Witch Hunter” and 2011’s “Priest.”

Sony Pictures is the house the horror film saga. Las entry got a worldwide box office of $160 billion for its 27% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
