Netflix’s The Crown trailer is out. The Crown is a historical drama series about the life of Queen Elizabeth II. It premieres on Nov. 4.
The show is an ambitious one: it has a budget of $150 million that has to spread out over the five seasons, ten episodes each. That’s about $2,5 million per episode, the expensive original series Netflix has ever done, but is a far cry from HBO’s Game of Thrones season 6, with an average cost of 10$ million per episode.
The star of the drama is Claire Foy. The creator is the screenwriter Peter Morgan, the man behind Hellen Mirren’s Oscar winner performance at 2007’s “The Queen.”
‘For better or worse, the crown has landed on my head’
The season’s plot follows young Elizabeth during the time she married Prince Phillip (former “Doctor Who” star Matt Smith) and her ascension in 1952. It kicks off with the death of King George VI (Jared Harris), the event that took the monarch to the throne.
The trailer shows a fissure in the marriage. While Elizabeth struggles with her unexpected ascendancy to power, Philipp tries to protect her wife of the scrutiny and the tensions the sovereign of England faces.
The 25-year old newlywed is aware of her duty and takes as a serious responsibility.
“For better or for worse, the crown has landed on my head,” she says, but she has a growing resentment against the throne.
All the same, Phillip also had to abandon his career in the Royal Navy to become the queen’s consort.
Vanessa Kirby and Eileen Atkins are also part of the 10-episode run that goes around the Buckingham Palace. The characters will be part of the personal intrigues, romances and political rivalries that shaped the course of European history.
The crown itself is son powerful it becomes its personality
Showrunners explain season one’s thematic will be about the effects on a woman to suddenly become two people. The protagonist is both Elizabeth Windsor and Elizabeth Regina, and the crown comes with a series and expectations and rules that might not accommodate to the person with the title.
During the first 11 years of her life, she was expecting to live an aristocratic life away from the public eye. It all changed when her uncle gave up the throne and her father became king.
Elizabeth will soon realize she cannot be herself with the crown on her head. As writer Morgan says, the crown has a personality of its own.
The show will be available starting November 4. In typical Netflix fashion, all of the episodes will be out at the same time, for the binge-watchers’ delight.
