Mr. Broadbent has been in many popular movies and won an Oscar for best support actor
A beloved actor ‘is coming’ to Game of Thrones. HBO has signed Oscar-winner Jim Broadbent to appear in the seventh season of the critically-acclaimed show. Mr. Broadbent will have a ‘significant role,‘ said Entertainment Weekly on Wednesday.
The team behind the fantasy drama have not revealed any information regarding Mr. Broadbent’s character. As GoT fans know, the showrunners are very secretive about what could happen in the story, to avoid spoilers.
The British performer has delivered outstanding acting over his 38-year career. Some of his movies include Time Bandits (1981), The Iron Lady (2011), the Bridget Jone’s Diary (2001-2004), and Iris (2001), for which he won an Oscar for best supporting actor.
However, younger generations might know Jim Broadbent for his iconic role as Professor Horace Slughorn in the Harry Potter films.
The speculations put Broadbent in Samwell Tarly’s story
Mr. Broadbent would join a list of previous Harry Potter stars. Ciarán Hinds played Aberforth Dumbledore and Mance Rayder, Natalia Tena played Tonks, as well as Osha. Also, David Bradley portrayed Hogwarts ‘squib’ caretaker, Argus Filch, before his role as Walder Frey.
Although Jim Broadbent’s character info remains a secret, fans across the internet have started to speculate about his involvement in the series. Some Twitter users are saying the actor could play a villain, as the show said goodbye to major antagonists last season.
On the other hand, Paste Magazine suggested Mr. Broadbent may appear in Sam Tarly’s storyline. According to the site, there is a character called Archmaester Marwyn in the books. The story describes him as a mysterious and untraditional maester, making Mr. Broadbent a good candidate for the role.
The magazine also stated the actor might not stick for long with the show, as other well-known performers like Ian Mcshane, Jonathan Pryce, and Sean Bean, have had relatively short appearances as well.
The 7th season of Game of Thrones will be shot in Spain, Iceland, and Northern Island. In July, HBO stated the show was not going to premier on spring, and it’s instead coming in summer 2017.
Showrunners David Benioff and D.B Weiss delayed the production to use the weather in their favor, as the storylines for next season would be better served that way, according to HBO’s Programming President, Casey Bloys.
Game of Thrones has only two seasons left, with the upcoming stories consisting of seven episodes instead of ten.
