On Thursday, Alcon Entertainment’s co-founders and co-CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson announced Jared Leto was joining the previously announced cast for Blade Runner the Sequel. Leto is known for his role award-winning role in Dallas Buyers Club and the recent Suicide Squad Movie.
The previously announced cast includes Harrison Ford, Ryan Gosling, Robin Wright, Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Carla Juri, Mackenzie Davis, Barkhad Abdi, David Dastmalchian, Hiam Abbass, Lennie James, and Dave Bautista.
Leto had a lot of problems with his former co-workers in Suicide Squad. According to the reports, Jared Leto literally became the Joker which proved bothersome for the rest of the staff. He was erratic during the whole filming process on and off screen.
“We are thrilled that Jared has agreed to play a key role in the BLADE RUNNER sequel. He is a phenomenal actor, and we know he will create a truly memorable, never before seen character,” said Johnson and Kosove.
Alcon is spending big time on a nominal cast
Alcon Entertainment bought Blade Runner in 2011. The Acquisition included the film, television and ancillary franchises. Alcon’s purchase also granted it the rights to produce new prequels and sequels to the sci-fi movie.
The Blade Runner sequel is going to take place many years after the original Movie. Harrison Ford will play his iconic role as Rick Deckard once again.
Hampton Fancher and Michael Green wrote the scripts for the film. The story will continue Fancher’s initial film on Philip K. Dick’s novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
Denis Villeneuve will direct the new Blade Runner, and Ridley Scott, who directed the original movie, will be one of the production executives along with Tim Gamble and Frank Giustra.
Dennis Villeneuve has a special connection with the Blade Runner franchise
Villeneuve declared he knows the original movie by heart on an Entertainment Weekly interview. He said the movie gave birth to his desire of becoming a director. “I remember the opening sequence perfectly,” he said. The director added the personal stakes were high when he was asked to direct the movie.
The director confirmed that the events would be on a future United States’ West Coast. Los Angeles is going to serve as one of the many scenarios production is going to use, and Villeneuve said Mother Nature was going to play a huge role.
Alcon Entertainment also presented an exclusive concept art for the new movie. Villeneuve described the concept art as a kind of snow blower that hovers over the streets and destroys snow. The picture features a futuristic a city on the west coast in a toxic environment.
The Film will hit the theaters on October 6, 2017.
