Game of Thrones’ creator George R. R. Martin is developing a new TV show based on “Wild Cards“, a series of long-running anthologies and novels. The renowned writer made the announcement through a post on his LiveJournal yesterday.
Universal Cable Productions (UCP) has acquired the rights for the making of the show that will involve Mr. Martin and Melinda M.snodgrass, his assistant editor and right hand, as well as some creators of the novel´s characters and an unnamed but well-credited writer whose work include Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Fans may not be too bored when Game Of Thrones ends
After the news of the beloved and multiple awards winning Game of Thrones coming to an end on season eight. The famous New Jersey author has taken fans by surprise by revealing what will be his next project.
“DEVELOPMENT WILL BEGIN INMEDIATLY ON WHAT WE HOPE WILL BE THE FIRST OF SEVERAL INTERLOCKING SERIES,” he posted on his blog.
Mr. Martin also stated that he would not be directly involved in the running of the show as he has an exclusive HBO development deal. Instead, Martin´s assistant editor and Gregory Noveck a producer from Syfy films will be, appointed to the task.
The author is spending his time writing “The Winds of Winter,” the forthcoming sixth novel of the books series Game of Thrones is based on.
The ‘Wild Cards’ books have tons of material to draw from
Wild Cards consists of various Sci-fi novels and anthologies written by several authors and edited by George R.R Martin, who refers to the 30 member group of creators as “The Wild Cards Trust.”
The stories take place on an alternate post-World War II Universe, an alien virus that affects the DNA is released on Manhattan causing all sorts of devastation. But the virus gives unique abilities to a small group of individuals
The first wild card novel was published on 1986 and was nominated for a Hugo Award but lost to Alan Moore´s Watchmen. Since then, the collection has expanded from books to graphic novels and even role-playing games.
UCP is responsible for the funding and production of the new show. The Company is currently gaining success with its critically acclaimed series “Mr.Robot”.
Mr. Martin is hopeful about the project´s future
As for possible premiere dates, George R.R Martin made clear that nothing is certain yet. The author also encouraged fans to express in his blog´s comment section which of the vast Book´s characters should appear on the show. “OF COURSE, HOLLYWOOD IS HOLLYWOOD,” wrote R.R. Martin. “BUT I THINK I HOPE I CROSS MY FINGERS THAT THE WILD CARDS WILL BE COMING TO YOUR HOMES IN THE NEXT YEAR OR TWO,” the writer added.
