On Monday, Ford Motors announced that the 2018 Mustang GT will be the fastest model ever in the lineup. The sports car will be able to go from 0 to 60 mph in under 4 seconds thanks to its new Drag Strip mode when it launches this fall.
The latest Mustang GT has been updated with a new design that sports a more aggressive look than before and it has more horsepower under the hood. With all of its enhancements, the Ford pony will likely cost a third of the price of a Porsche 911 and get faster to 60 mph.
Ford has yet to announce an official price tag for the 2018 Mustang, but the custom site where people will be able to build their own model according to their tastes will go live on Tuesday, July 25. The site will also show pricing, which is expected to be just below $30,000.
The 2018 Mustang GT also has a new look
Aside from the fact that the powertrain on Ford’s classic sports car has seen some significant improvements, the outside fascia of the Mustang GT has also gained a new look for this year’s iteration.
The 2018 model has changed its front face to the world starting with the design of the headlights. They are now more housed within the chassis and have shifted from an upwards angle to a downwards corner, which has led some people to say that the Mustang GT is now “sad”.
In spite of this, the dynamic overhaul now makes way for what seems to be an additional vent under the headlight, more room for the front grille, and a more pronounced wheel arch that also makes the whole car seem a bit closer to the ground.
As a result, the lower air intake is, well, lower but also more compact than before. In the rear, the taillights have suffered a minimum redesign that curves the extremes inwards, while the central panel sports some new details. The exhausts are now four instead of two for the standard model.
All these changes pair nicely with the improved 5.0-liter V8 engine that the 2018 Mustang GT packs. It generates 460 horsepower and 420 lb/feet of torque, which gets reduced to the minimum in Drag Strip mode to reach the 60 mph mark in just under 4 seconds.
The Ford legend brings a 10-speed automatic transmission this year, which is available in both the standard V8 model and the one with the EcoBoost engine. The second one has the same 310 horsepower as last year, but it has 350 lb/feet of torque and makes it to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds.
Official pricing is expected on Tuesday when the custom builder goes live and reveals price tags for different models and configurations. Availability will be revealed at a later time.
