Caitlyn Jenner (formerly known as Bruce Jenner), may be one of the best Olympic athletes the world has ever seen, but her life story sure isn’t quite like any other.
As the 40th anniversary of her winning the Olympic gold approaches, she has yet again made headlines by agreeing to pose nude wearing nothing but the American flag and her medal.
To a few, it might seem symbolic of the fact that after winning the ‘76 Decathlon, she took a flag from one of the spectators and did a victory lap, and started a tradition among winning athletes.
However, admittedly by her, there is a lot more to her than just her medal. She hid it in her makeup drawer so that the children don’t end up using it as a benchmark to their success.
After completing her sexual transition, in 2015, she revealed her new name and identity in a Vanity Fair cover.
The 33-page long story quite vividly describes her struggle with gender dysphoria. It was with this discontentment, that despite being at his best, Bruce had decided that he would hang his boots after the ‘76 Olympics and embark on a pursuit of personal satisfaction.
In the story, she admits to standing up on the stage after winning, and feeling like a liar, because all he wanted to do was the transition. “There’s so much more to me than those 48 hours in the stadium, and I can’t talk about it.” She said to the reporter.
Even through the entire transition, she faced family struggles, including and especially when her marriage with Kris Jenner failed.
One thing that has worked for her after the Olympic success is her celebrity status. Her decision to encash on her celebrity status as soon as she shot to fame, lasted longer than she expected, with movie and TV roles, coming at will.
Her close link with the family reality show called ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians’ did some good as well. In 1977, she also took over from legendary pole vaulter Bob Richards as the spokesperson of Wheaties (The Breakfast of Champions).
All her success’ aside and she rates this successful transition into a woman, a greater feat than any other.
One can not fathom the tormenting times she faced, as she admittedly contemplated suicide when a story along with pictures broke out on TMZ’s Paparazzi, of her leaving the doctor’s after a trachea operation.
However, it seems the strong woman that she is, she has been able to leave all those behind and move on as she makes this bold move. One can’t help but applaud such efforts by an Olympian in a completely different part of their life.
