The new moon has been sighted in Kozhikode in Kerala and the holy month of Ramadan begins in Kerala today. A declaration to this effect was made by the Palayam Imam VP Suhail Maulavi and others. The rest of India will, however, start the holy fasting from tomorrow after the sighting of the moon this evening.
Hundreds of Muslims around the world from Istanbul to New York observe the sacred month of Ramazan characterized by long hours of fasting. They will refrain from eating, drinking and observe celibacy from dawn to dusk.
It is followed by Iftar which is breakfast but is often a huge feast. The fasting continues through the lunar month and is one of the five pillars of Islam when the Holy Koran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)
Children, the sick, the elderly, menstruating women, expectant mothers, nursing mothers, and people who are traveling are exempt from fasting.
Saudi Arabia State TV announced that the Moon was sighted on Sunday and the sacred month of Ramzan will begin from Today. The blessed month will be observed from Monday in Indonesia, Kuwait, Jordan, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Yemen, Lebanon, Syria, Qatar, Afghanistan and the Palestinian territories.
Ramadan is a month of intense introspection and to show devotion to God. At the same time, it helps us understand the suffering of the deprived that are not able to get one square meal a day.
Muslims no matter where they are fast according to the dictates of their conscience.
Muslims follow a lunar calendar and hence different parts of the globe declare Ramadan a day or two apart. Pakistan and Iran are yet to announce the start of Ramadan because the Moon has not been sighted in these countries.
