Since the beginnings of the industry, the inclusion inappropriate content and nudity in video games has been a controversial topic. The harassment feature found in Koei’s Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 is the latest example.

Despite becoming more and more common, controversy has resurfaced once again with the recent releases of Kindred Spirits on the Roof, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Game of the Year Edition, and most notably Dead or Alive Xtreme 3.

Kindred Spirits on the Roof, released back in February, was touted as Steam game that showed unedited explicit content but turned out to be a modest erotic title. For its part, M-rated title The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt got a Game of the Year edition last month.

But it’s Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 that triggered the alarms. The game will launch in PS VR, and it allows players to molest female characters. They can touch women inappropriately, despite her protests. The series has been criticized for the objectification of women in general.

Koei is pushing the boundaries with Dead or Alive Xtreme 3

In 1982, Japanese video game publisher Koei released Nightlife for the NEC PC-8801. It was the first erotic PC game with explicit erotic graphics.

Koei is also behind the controversial Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball spin-off series. In Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 the females and their looks play a more focal role than it does in the main Dead or Alive games.

The title features multiple gameplay modes such as beach volleyball, butt battle, beach flag, and rock climbing. The player is also able to do many things with the girls like dating and apparently harassing them too.

Some developers include NSFW content with mods and mini games

Popular franchises like Grand Theft Auto and God of War are also well known for featuring adult situations.

GTA’s Hot Coffee minigame, hidden in the game’s code, caused all the buzz. The only way to access the full scene was to mod the game. Meanwhile, a similar mini-game has appeared in most God of War installment except Betrayal and Ascension.

Additionally, patches or hacks to non-adult games may add or unlock pornographic themes like the Hot Coffee mod. Other examples include the Tomb Raider series, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
