Since the beginnings of the industry, the inclusion of sex and nudity in video games has been a controversial topic. The harassment feature found in Koei’s Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 is the latest example.

Despite becoming more and more common, controversy has resurfaced once again with the recent releases of Kindred Spirits on the Roof, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Game of the Year Edition, and most notably Dead or Alive Xtreme 3.

Kindred Spirits on the Roof, released back in February, was touted as Steam’s first uncensored sex game but turned out to be a modest erotic title. For its part, M-rated title The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt got a Game of the Year edition last month.

But it’s Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 that triggered the alarms. The game will launch in PS VR, and it allows players to molest female characters. They can touch women inappropriately, despite her protests. The series has been criticized for the oversexualized portrayal of women as well.

Koei is pushing the boundaries with Dead or Alive Xtreme 3

In 1982, Japanese video game publisher Koei released Nightlife for the NEC PC-8801. It was the first erotic PC game with sexually explicit graphics.

Koei is also behind the controversial Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball spin-off series. In Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 the females and their sex appeal play a more focal role than it does in the main Dead or Alive games.

The title features multiple gameplay modes such as beach volleyball, butt battle, beach flag, and rock climbing. The player is also able to do many things with the girls like dating and apparently harassing them too.

Some developers include sexual content with mods and mini games

Popular franchises like Grand Theft Auto and God of War are also well known for their explicit sexual content. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas put sex and nudity into the spotlight of a wider audience due to its massive worldwide success.

GTA’s Hot Coffee sexual minigame, hidden in the game’s code, was behind all the buzz. The only way to access the full-on sex scene was to mod the game. Meanwhile, a quick-time sex mini-game has appeared in most God of War installment except Betrayal and Ascension.

Additionally, patches or hacks to non-adult games may add or unlock sexual and pornographic themes like with the Hot Coffee mod. Other examples include the Tomb Raider series, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

The first erotic game was launched for the Apple II

Games with some degree of sexual content are common in Japan, where there’s even a pornographic video game sub-genre called eroge. European countries tend to censor games for violence, but rarely for sexual content or nudity.

Meanwhile, North America has seen sporadic releases. One of the earliest video games to feature sexual themes was Softporn Adventure, published by On-Line Systems for the Apple II in 1981.

Ever since then many video games have used sex or nudity to sell or enhance games and others as a character motivation, in-game reward, or a gameplay element.
